http://www.naturalnews.com/029098_orthorexia_mental_disorder.html "This is no joke: If you focus on eating healthy foods, you're "mentally diseased" and probably need some sort of chemical treatment involving powerful psychotropic drugs. The Guardian newspaper reports, "Fixation with healthy eating can be sign of serious psychological disorder" and goes on to claim this "disease" is called orthorexia nervosa -- which is basically just Latin for "nervous about correct eating." But they can't just called it "nervous healthy eating disorder" because that doesn't sound like they know what they're talking about. So they translate it into Latin where it sounds smart (even though it isn't). That's where most disease names come from: Doctors just describe the symptoms they see with a name like osteoporosis (which means "bones with holes in them"). Getting back to this fabricated "orthorexia" disease, the Guardian goes on to report, "Orthorexics commonly have rigid rules around eating. Refusing to touch sugar, salt, caffeine, alcohol, wheat, gluten, yeast, soya, corn and dairy foods is just the start of their diet restrictions. Any foods that have come into contact with pesticides, herbicides or contain artificial additives are also out." Wait a second. So attempting to avoid chemicals, dairy, soy and sugar now makes you a mental health patient? Yep. According to these experts. If you actually take special care to avoid pesticides, herbicides and genetically modified ingredients like soy and sugar, there's something wrong with you. But did you notice that eating junk food is assumed to be "normal?" If you eat processed junk foods laced with synthetic chemicals, that's okay with them. The mental patients are the ones who choose organic, natural foods, apparently."
This is kind of sad, though there definitely are some people whose obsession with "health" food borders on OCD, IMO. That said, most people whom I would consider to be, well, REALLY concerned about their diet are very sane, if occasionally obnoxious in their self-righteousness. What's really sad is that because they've been so misinformed by the media and food companies, I really think there are a lot of people out there who don't know what a healthy diet really is... It's at times startling how little you contribute to this discussion board.
hey if anyone can actually turn eating healthy into some sort of political stereotype or agenda have at it. i bet he has a lot of friends being so open minded. probably doesnt look down on people that are different at all...
Yawn. [rquoter] Orthorexia, or orthorexia nervosa is a term coined by Steven Bratman, a Colorado MD, to denote an eating disorder characterized by excessive focus on eating healthy foods. In rare cases, this focus may turn into a fixation so extreme that it can lead to severe malnutrition or even death. [/rquoter] If you go to a restaurant, eat a big meal, and refuse to eat the desert you want or ask for lowfat dressing when you'd prefer blue cheese out of concern for your waistline, that it normal health management. But if you refuse all food for a month out of concern that you are too fat at 98 pounds, that is a mental condition, known as anorexia nervosa. If you have questions about whether some new law is dangerous and check it out to be sure it isn't, that is normal. But if you assume everybody is out to get you without even the slightest provocation, and even after it has been proved otherwise, that is plumbum album galeum nervosa. I tell you this with the greatest of sincerity, ToyCen428: You. Need. To. Visit. A. Psychiatrist. It was kind of amusing when your delusions were fixation on aliens and distant government conspiracies to cover them up. These are harmless and don't have an effect on your daily life. But apparently, you are now beginning to suffer what is known as folie à deux from all your contact with your fellow tinfoil-hatters on abovetopsecret.com and similar websites. You are on a very self-destructive trajectory.
All of that is just too much, but I've no problem with someone doing all that if I don't have to hear about it all the time.
It doesn't sound that ridiculous to me. People have found ways to corrupt every good thing on this earth. While eating healthy is a good idea, I can see someone obsessing on it to such an extent that it's pathological.
Eating healthy can become an obsession, and you could be missing the correct amount of nutrients/vitamins/calories if you go too extreme.
Reusable Shopping Bags Are Serious Risk to Public Health by Alexa Nemeth | Jun 29, 2010 According to a joint food safety research report issued by researchers at the University of Arizona and Loma Linda University, reusable grocery bags can serve as a breeding ground for dangerous foodborne bacteria and pose a serious risk to public health. The researchers randomly tested reusable grocery bags carried by shoppers in Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Tucson. Researchers also found consumers were almost completely unaware of the need to regularly wash their bags. "Our findings suggest a serious threat to public health, especially from coliform bacteria including E. coli, which were detected in half the bags sampled," said Charles Gerba, Ph.D., a University of Arizona environmental microbiology professor and co-author of the study. "Furthermore, consumers are alarmingly unaware of these risks and the critical need to sanitize their bags after every use." Gerber said the bacteria levels found in reusable bags were significant enough to cause a wide range of serious health problems and even lead to death. http://www.foodsafetynews.com/2010/06/reusable-shopping-bags-and-food-safety/
1. It's not the bags or the idea behind them, it's the morons who don't wash them. 2. This has nothing to do with this thread, even tangentially. 3. But it's funny, because you can't start threads of your own.
I can see this...hell, everything is bad for you nowadays... I do find myself obsessing about calories, exercising, etc...
Keep comin' up with crap like this and the medical industry will continue thriving on the pains/side effects of others.
Same here. I'm on the "warrior diet". Eating a salad as we speak. No chicken in it..that will be in the dinner salad. You can drink whey protein during the day though. Basically, you're supposed to eat lower on the food chain (nuts, veggies, fruits) and one main meal at night. I drink protein again at night with a carb (apple usually) and eat fat free cottage cheese right before bed. This diet is supposed to help get rid of the annoying fat on the stomach that won't go away even after strict dieting/ab exercises. Leaner is better!
i think the point is anything that you obsess over to the extreme is not good for you. Doesnt matter what it is. It's not about strict healthy eating, it's about avoiding junk at all costs, even if it means turning your life upside down. for example: Driving an extra mile or two during your lunch break to a specific place that has a drink you want when there's perfectly good drinks at the convenience door next door, is fine, or sane for the most part. Now driving across townback home for 45-50 mins when you have a one hour lunch break to get that drink, ont he way running lights and stop signs and speeding, then there's something wrong with you, it's a freakin drink, no need to risk your life and the life of others.
