if yao signs a reduced contract for an extension it will officially show potential free agents that he is here to stay and would welcome a helping hand. this could be a big win for houston. one more ace in morey's sleeve.
I still believe that Yao will test his foot this season, and if further breaks occur or more surgery is needed, he'll simply pack it in. You really get the sense that he's tired of the constant rehabilitation and would prefer to devote himself to other pursuits than go through that whole cycle again.
That would be wondeful to restructure Yaos contract to get a another peice here if he accepted it. I would definately respect Yao even more.
Good points. But I think Yao will get more than $50 mil deal in FA market if opts out right now. Look at all those caps spcae by different teams. It is well worth for some teams to offer a bigger contract for Yao, knowing Yao's marketing value will pay himself off if he's healthy, and insurance will cover the cost if he's not. This might be their only chance to get a center Yao's caliber in many years, especially for small market rebuilding teams. If Yao is healthy, the get a top level center who brings more money than he's getting paid, if not, he is covered by insurance while the team keep accumulating draft picks, a win win situation for them.
Strategic move by Morey, announce that Yao is in full health and ready to go just before or right at when teams can begin negociations. Excellent.
Yao is one of the few if not the only NBA players I could see taking less dollars to help the team. I am no capologist, but maybe Yao opting out taking less money somehow makes it much easier for the Rockets to do the JJ and Bosh sign and trades?
Yao is here, he's not leaving. However, it's in his best interest to opt out now for long term money, then stay for what ever cap will be around next summer when he may get a small percentage of what he gets now. I also don't think DM is still "building" around Yao or else he wouldn't be going after a big name like Bosh, he would just be looking for MLE back ups. Going after Bosh means that while he believes Yao is going to be there at center, he also isn't going to be carrying the team by himself.
SnT has nothing to do with how much Yao gets paid, I guess? Unless Yao becomse part of the trade to make salary match. In that case, why should Yao take less money for being traded to a bad team?
Find me a top 5 center that is making MLE... Not going to happen. Morey said it himself in an recent interview... The most sought-after Rocket player by GM's from other teams is Yao Ming... Yao will get paid. Book it.
It does matter from a team fiscal standpoint, rather than a cap standpoint. As we've seen, even the Lakers with 2 championships and being in LA can't prevent them from looking at shedding salary and such. At some point, Les is simply going to run out of money. So if Yao taking less means Les can still pay Bosh the max, resign Scola, etc. to create a championship caliber team, then it would matter.
I feel Yao owes it to the franchise and fans to sign for less. In the last 5 years, out of a possible 19,680 minutes, Yao played 9105 minutes or 46% of the time. I just can't justify paying big bucks for someone so unreliable. i think he needs to take a paycut.
he may not be going to opt-out, but hes going to ask a fecund contract for sure. No alternatives, its all about status IMO
And those weren't even 9105 quality minutes. Fresh off his injuries he was getting clowned by players like Chris Kaman, Kendrick Perkins...sometimes he even clowned himself with the getting stuffed by the rim nonsense. Then even in those very few minutes he's at prime level, he can get taken out some of the time by fronting or become a defensive liability against some players. Perhaps 25-33% of the time, he can actually play effectively. The actual value of what he has provided is worth perhaps 6-8mm. Anything over that is a speculative bet that his future health will be better than past health.
I think the anouncement will simply be Yao officially opting to keep his current contract. For that to happen since it's an ETO Yao will need to just let the June 30 deadline pass.
fans are so emotional. they don't think when they write. there is nothing we can discuss if yao picks up his option. this is the best scenario for rox. if yao doesn't, we have a quite few to talk about. the mainstream on this board is to wish that yao signs a long term deal of less money with rox, 10 mil/per year. com'n, 10 mil/ per year. it is a dramatic pay cut from over 16 mil. remember yao would be a free agent if he declined his option. i really doubt no team except rox is willing to offer 10 mil/per year contract to yao. it would be dumb dumb for other teams not to gamble a 10 mil/per year contract on yao even he has injury problems. don't forget camby got 10 mil/per year contract although he always misses a certain amount of time in his career. let's say if 10 mil/ peryear is what yao can get from any team. now the question turns into why yao has to sign with rox. everyone can't deny whether yao takes paycut or not won't impact on the chance of getting bosh. everyone here as well as yao knows getting bosh is a remote thing for rox. so, we have to ask ourselves a question why yao declines his option to be a free agent. first, he wants a new max contract. however, as all fans here pointed out the reasoning he shouldn't get one. the max is 10 mil/per year for him to take. if this is the case, yao must have the other reasons not to pick up his option. a title or/and long term security. as i said before, 10 mil/ per year long term deal shouldn't be a problem for yao to get from alot of teams. a title must be the key to his decision of taking a dramatic paycut. the precondition of this discussion is yao declines his option and becomes a free agent. it means rox doesn't have yao. with current roster minus yao, how much confidence do you have and believe rox will be a title contender? with current roster minus yao, how much confidence do you have and believe a mega super star free agent is willing to sign with rox? i don't have any confidence. if you do, you must kidd youselves. so why does yao have to sign with rox for 10 mil/per year contract and get no title? if i were yao and had to take a huge paycut, i would go to a sure title contender. i understand fans want the best interest for rox but nothing is free. if you want yao not to pick up his option and give him a much less contract, you take the risk of losing him. if you really think about rox, you should hope yao does pick up his option so rox has one more year to monitor his health and make a decision. if yao doesn't, thing becomes complicated. it's not good to rox at all.
Well said. Les is a multi-billionaire, and he's able to and supposed to spend that kind of money to contend. We as fans should be the last ones to worry about him running out of money(he's not going to, those salaries can be paid by his net worth earning interest in the bank, not to mention yao brings tons of money his way).
I believe that the announcement will be that Yao is not opting out. Thus the reason for "a couple of days" by Morey.... DD
http://www.myfoxhouston.com/dpp/sports/local/100629-yao-will-not-opt-out-of-his-rockets-contract Yao Will Not Opt Out of His Rockets Contract Houston - Center Yao Ming told FOX 26 Sports on Tuesday that his career will continue with the Houston Rockets during the 2010-2011 season. The fifth and final year of Yao's contract includes an early termination clause giving him the right to opt out and become an unrestricted free agent Wednesday night, which he will not do. "My decision is very clear, I am going to stay with the Rockets," Yao said. "Why? Because everything we've done in the past I feel very comfortable with and also I believe our GM (Daryl Morey) will bring us more talent for helping us build a championship team." Yao will make $17.69 million during the 2010-2011 season. He did not play last season after undergoing reconstructive surgery on his left foot last July. The injury is a major reason why Yao has waited until now to make his decision. "First thing I need to find out is how my foot is going," Yao said. "Obviously I missed one year and it's not easy to decide everything. I need to find a lot of information about my foot, about the way I play, how to improve myself after another injury. It's a little bit complicated after this injury." Yao joined the Rockets eight years ago after Houston made him the first overall choice in the 2002 NBA Draft. Houston has become his second home. "I keep saying after I came here after 2002, I said this community gave me a very warm feeling, almost like home and the people here treat, not just me, treat this team so nice, supporting us whether we are losing or we are winning," Yao said. "I feel we are very strong in the city." If Yao does not sign an extension with the Rockets he can become an unrestricted free agent June 30, 2011. "It's still far from now," Yao said. "My focus is still on my foot rehab. I feel much better. I feel I improved so much in the last couple of months. "Even every week I can feel the difference, My goal right now is to get back to game shape as soon as possible and try helping this team." In the seven years Yao has played for Houston he has been selected to play in the NBA All-Star Game every season, starting all but one. "I know Yao is extremely happy to be back on the court next year for the Rockets," said John Huizinga, Yao's agent, in an interview with FOX 26 Sports. "The fans have been fantastic. The Rockets organization has supported Yao since day one and he enjoys playing with his teammates. It's a great situation all the way around."
great. that's all rox needs so far. it makes morey's job much easier. does it indicate sth? such as yao has confidence he will be back and play a few more years at the highest level w/o problem. so, he is not worry about the contract after the next season.
