Still a great deal of information to gather on CTE -but there certainly seems to be a strong correlation.
    _____

Researchers find brain trauma in Henry

Chris Henry, the Cincinnati Bengals wide receiver who died in a traffic accident last year, had chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) -- a form of degenerative brain damage caused by multiple hits to the head -- at the time of his death, according to scientists at the Brain Injury Research Institute, a research center affiliated with West Virginia University.

Researchers have now discovered CTE in the brains of more than 50 deceased former athletes, including more than a dozen NFL and college players, pro wrestler Chris Benoit and NHL player Reggie Fleming.

Repeated blows to the head are the only known cause of CTE, researchers say. Concussive hits can trigger a buildup of toxic tau protein within the brain, which in turn can create damaging tangles and threads in the neural fibers that connect brain tissue. Victims can lose control of their impulses, suffer depression and memory loss, and ultimately develop dementia.

There has to be some Carbon/ Kevlar mix that would be light years better for protection than the plastic/ foam helmets they wear today.

But if someone gets speared in the torso by one of your new helmets wouldn't it result in massive organ trauma and failure?

The pads would all be made of the same material (shoulder, rib, hip, etc) -- just throwing a vague idea out there... no plans for a patent yet.

I don't think it matters what the pads are made out of, as the brain itself sloshes and bangs inside the skull which is what causes the damage. Sort of like an unbelted passenger in a car that comes to a sudden stop.

Slow down the game, somehow. Lots of injuries happen on kick returns. Try to reduce the most dangerous elements. Helmets have made concussions go up, not down, as players use them as weapons and no longer avoid head-on contact. Scale back the padding, clean up the roids, and you'll be off to a good start.

    Bingo.

The solution will come through research into the actual pathology.
The only thing the NFL should do is fully support the research and have extensive monitoring of their players during and after their careers.

I guess until "brain medicine" costs more than a signing bonus or a multi-googol dollar TV contract, nothing will change.

there is absolutely no solution to this problem. football is a violent game, **** happens. you either have to ban the sport or accept that there will be brain injuries, there really isn't to much else to it.

Helmet sensor measures impact of hit. If combined impact of multiple hits reaches threshhold, player sit.

This can't be good news for other players anyway you look at it.

    - Henry was what 25? 26? When he last played football.

    - He didn't play that many seasons or much football in general.

    - His position WR doesn't take as big of a beating in comparison to players at other positions.

    - I also don't remember him taking any serious blows. Which in turn is the scary part cause it obviously doesn't take much. I think that's why this should be so worrisome to other players and the league as a whole.

It's a shame that the NFL Players Union is such a joke, retired players really get hosed by the NFL in terms of post-retirement benefits especially when you consider all of the medical problems that most of them are likely to face (or already do).

I wonder what things would be like if the NFLPA had the type of power that the MLBPA has.
