Analysis on Yahoo...good thing about the pick - it upset Utah fans... Analysis: Great value for the Rockets in the final pick of the lottery. Patrick Patterson won't be a star in the NBA, but the former Kentucky big man will be successful as a post defender, a back-to-the-basket scorer and a mid-range shooter on pick-and-pops. Utah fans are already screaming that this is who the Jazz should have taken at No. 9 instead of Gordon Hayward. -- Jeff Eisenberg
yes,but toronto just drafted a pf. (although i think davis will be destroyed on the block,as usual toronto doesnt know what they are doing.)
I see Patterson as a slightly bigger Chuck Hayes. Nice pick for Morey - the kid can come in and contribute immediately. If the deals weren't there to move up(or down), Patterson seems like a solid pick for a team looking to contend now. If we keep him, he will fit in nicely with our second unit. I don't see why Patterson and Hill couldn't play at the same time to spell Yao/Scola. I still can't help thinking Morey has a trade up his sleeve though. I was encouraged that Cousins went to Sacramento as Houston obviously has a report with them given that they have been frequent willing trade partners over the last several years.
Man if this guy was any taller wouldn't he just be a center? This guy is 6 feet 9. I'm pretty sure that's the average size of an NBA PF. But this guy has a 7 foot 1 wingspan. In my opinion we keep Patrick Patterson. BUT don't pass up any options.
People need to stop worrying about being undersized or having too many PF. Unless Patterson is in a pre-arranged wink-wink deal with another team, this is simply a BPA pick. And that Morey likely has a backup center in the works either later in this draft, or via FA. The truth is, unless we draft a true center, ANY player drafted is piled up behind a lot of depth. At wing we have Battier/Bud/Martin/Ariza, at PG we have Brooks/Lowry/Llul. And obviously, Morey doesn't think much of the centers at 14. This pick gives the Rockets more flexibility in trading Scola or Hill. And he has the potential to be Landry off the bench without the defensive/rebounding inadequacies.
you dont have to fear them but the point is they can have all those players on the court on the same team which makes they very big and long. Gasol is not a great defender but because he can sit next to bynum he plays better defense. Perkins is a good defender but gasol was eating the whole series except one game.
I didn't know anything about him but have watched 3 extensive interviews of him on youtube. Morey is a genius. This guy could have been a lottery pick last year. He had great stats every single year he played and it seemed last year was his best year. It seems like the Rockets draft and acquire level-headed guys. In his interviews, he's very well spoken, thorough, thoughtful and honest. You can tell he's really mature and he's gonna stay out of trouble and work really hard. Good to hear he graduated with a communication degree in three years. Rock solid pick, I'm excited. Check out his awesome stats. High ppg and field goal percentage and a good offensive rebounder. Heck yeah! http://www.nba.com/d...rick-patterson/ interviews: http://www.draftexpr...Patterson-1225/
That's really interesting. Morey must have been doing cartwheels when Patterson was still there at the 14.
Yeah, I agree. he was the best player available at the time. After that pick, looking at the rest of the board, it looked pretty pitiful.
Have you forgotten who won the NBA championships? There front line 6'11-7'0 Bynum, Gasol, Odom.... Boston had a big front to before Perkins went down. Basically our interior presence will not get it done. (At least for now)

Gasol and Bynum are centers and Patterson is a PF and I am pretty sure Patterson would be able to out-muscle Odom in the paint. 6'9 is only 3 inches from 7'0, and I don't consider 6'9 undersized for a power forward. One of the best, Karl Marlone, flying scissor-kicks and all was 6'9. (I really hate using him as an example b/c I couldn't stand him, but he was 6'9 and a good power forward.)
great points, and dont forget, landry wasnt as great of an athlete as he was after the rockets trainers were through with him. patterson has potential to improve to be a better athlete
Why do people keep saying ship this guy and this guy to Toronto for Bosh. Bosh is a FA so he is going to have to first agree to come to Houston before anything. At that point you tell Toronto what you are going to give them or they will wind up with nothing. Houston will probably offer a younger low salary guy and then some dead weight, but what Toronto will want will have nothing to do with it.
