Just a blurb about E. Williams doing his first workout with Houston. If it's true it is significant because the kid has been injured and unable to workout since Spurs workout in mid may. People speculated the kid had a guarantee with the spurs and his pulling out workouts was an excuse but now he has worked out with Houston. I like this kid but there is no way you take him at 14. So what are the Rockets up to. Are they trading down. Are they convinced they will get a big through free agency. Are they buying a pick? Who know I sure don't. Apparently Elliot Williams had his 1st workout today. Even tweeted about it. An NBA source told me it was for Houston. In LA. Just shooting. From DraftExpress.com link http://www.draftexpress.com I haven't watched much video on this kid but I do like what I see. He can play point and sg. He has a good reach and good hops. Hell be in th dunk contest out some point in his career. So interesting workout to say the least. One thing is for certain the Rockets are looking for a backup point. The have brought in a ton of pgs and some combos, Williams falling in the latter category. Again the only reason you find out about a Rocket workout is when the player himself reveals it.
Interesting: here is what they say at Draft Express: Required Linky poo ------------------------------------------------------------------- Situational Statistics: This Year’s Shooting Guard Crop June 10, 2010 Elliot Williams does a number of things exceptionally well, and has the potential to be an efficient scorer if he improves some of his scoring tools. Ranking right around average in terms of usage at 17.4 possessions per-game and slightly above average at 0.961 PPP overall, Williams’ best asset in comparison to his peers is his ability to use his quickness to get to the line. He was fouled on an impressive 14.2% of his overall shots, leading our sample of prospects by more than 3%. Despite ranking right around average in terms of half court field goal percentage (42.2%), Williams scores on a higher percentage (45.4%) of his non-fast break possessions than any other player. Clearly, his first step plays a major role in his ability to create contact at the rim. His role for Memphis certainly helped as well. Although he spent nearly twice as many of his possessions playing off the ball in spot up situations than Evan Turner (17.2% vs. 9.5%), Williams got some 43% of his offense operating one-on-one or working off a pick. A capable jump shooter when left open (42.9%), but limited when defended (27.3%), the Duke transfer has the resume of a guard capable of sliding over to handle the ball next to a shooting point guard or remaining off the ball and slashing to the rim. Williams only shot 1.9 pull up jumpers per-game last season, preferring to drive all the way to the rim where he shot an average 51.3%. Given his lack of physical strength, Williams will need to continue to hone his shooting ability in the mid-range area to become a more complete offensive threat at the shooting guard position. --------------------------------------------------------------------- Sounds like a Morey guy to me. DD
Yeah, thats kind of cool that Houston keeps their workouts so secret. Remember Orton tweeted that he was about to workout in Houston, but you haven't heard of it from the mainstream. Anyway, if Houston is looking to move down and draft in the late first or second, they should seriously consider getting Torrance (late 1st) and Vasquez (early 2nd). Two combo PG/SG's who can lead and score. Both have been impressing scouts by doing well in all workouts.
A strange statistic that I have been tracking lately that I really like is minutes per free throw attempt. I like to look at this stat in combination with PPS. Just my own little formula. I like how often Elliot gets to the line but his overall PPS is lacking. I would much rather have James Anderson.
Around what area is he projected to go? The more I see the depth of this draft, the more it makes sense to trade back a bit and pick up 2 assets. I still want to see the rockets draft a big and develop him, but because there are so many bigs this draft, guys like Williams may slide alittle more than usual. On a side note, I personally think alot of people here in the Garm are sleeping on Jermaine Taylor going into next season. I have a funny feeling this kid is going to shine in his sophmore year for the rockets.
http://sports.yahoo.com/nba/news?slug=ys-draftbuzzb062210 The Portland Trail Blazers have targeted University of Memphis guard Elliot Williams and are actively working to get an additional first-round pick in the 20s to draft him, league sources told Yahoo! Sports. Without another pick in the late first round, Portland will have to decide whether it wants to use the 22nd selection on Williams. The Blazers would prefer to use No. 22 on a different player, but don’t believe Williams will be available when they select again at No. 34. Sources say the Blazers have been willing to give Memphis the 34th overall pick and as much as $3 million to get one of the Grizzlies’ two picks – either Nos. 25 or 28. Memphis has discussed trading those two picks to Minnesota to move up to the 16th spot. Blazers owner Paul Allen paid $2 million to exchange the 44th pick for No. 34 with Golden State on Monday. Williams has been slowed with a knee injury suffered in a predraft session last month in San Antonio, but Portland has worked him out and feels confident in his recovery. Pritchard really needs to stop copying Morey
This is just ridiculous. The Blazers are willing to pay $5M to move up from #44 to #25. If Morey had THAT kind of financial support (and he almost does with Les, who's great), there's no telling what he could do. $12M to move up to #4 through a series of trades?
Turns out this guy is Morey's target all along. They drafted Jermaine Taylor last year who also worked out for the Rox twice.
Until Bill Gates buys an NBA team no one can get the support Portland is going to get. Paul Allen can buy and sell Mark Cuban.
