I remember Harold Miner being the one player I was ready to shoot the team over. My temples were flaring that year. I still don't know how they passed him up, but by golly, it was the right decision.

Not trading Ralph Sampson for Chicago's 1 round pick and taking Jordan. Other than that since Rudy took over we have seen very productive drafts regardless of where we pick.

Actually, it was more like not trading Ralph Sampson for Portland's #1(#2 overall). Portland was looking for a center and would've taken Sampson off our hands, instead we didn't do it and they took Bowie. We could've had Clyde, Dream, and Mike in those two years. That sucks. I imagine the Rockets probably would've won about 13-14 Championships in the last 17 years. The Rockets would've been known as the greatest sports franchise in sports history except for maybe the Yankees.

I've heard this before, but remind me again what the scenario is in which the Rox would have ended up with Akeem, MJ, and Glide? That assumes we pick Glide instead of McCray, right?

Portland had the #2 pick in the draft and they had Clyde Drexler whom they had selected the year before. The Rockets had the #1 pick in the draft and Ralph Sampson whom they had selected #1 the year before. Portland offered the Rockets the #2 pick + Clyde Drexler in exchange for Ralph Sampson. The Rockets declined the offer. Had they accepted the offer, they would have selected MJ with the #2 pick (or so we think), giving them Drexler, Jordan, and Olajuwon. In hindsight, they could have built the greatest dynasty in sports history, but I can see why they didn't make the deal at the time. Would you trade Tim Duncan for a second year 2-guard who averaged only 8ppg and the #2 pick in the draft? Sampson was supposed to revolutionize the center position etc.

On a related note, I found it interesting that in some article I read, MJ said that at the time of the draft, he was mentally prepared to go to the Rockets at #1.

The owner made the GM pick a player who had no chance of playing in the NBA, and the GM did his job.

I was most upset that we took McCray instead of Clyde in '83. I knew that would haunt the Rockets. I used to watch Clyde during PhiSlammaJamma days, and he was so athletic.

The trade we didn't take with Portland the next year for Jordan and Drexler was the one I was most angry with after the fact, once Sampson's knees gave out. I have to admit, I was more focused on the Drexler part of the deal than Jordan, at the time. The twin towers experiment was exciting at the time, and noone knew that Jordan would turn out so good and Sampson's knees would give out so fast.

I was also upset we didn't trade Sampson for James Worthy and Byron Scott and whatever draft choice.

In '90, I wanted us to pick Jayson Williams instead of Alec Kessler. In '91, I was convinced that Stanley Roberts was going to be the steal of the draft, and wanted him over John Turner. In '92, I was convinced Rudy was wrong to take Horry over Miner. In '93, I thought there wasn't anyone worth picking, but Rudy took Cassell. I loved the Othella Harrington pick, but that's because I had seen him up here in DC. In '97, I didn't think there was anything any good, and still didn't when we took Rhodes. In '98, I wanted us to trade up somehow. I liked Dickerson, but got pissed off each time we passed Lewis.

Since Rudy took over, I haven't been upset until with his picks until a couple years ago when we passed on Rashard Lewis, especially picking Turckan, but I was glad he got a pick for him, which if we get it next year, will turn into a genius move. He blew me away with his picks of Mobely, Harrington, Cassell and Horry, and how they turned out. Of course, I love the Francis deal the most.

Eric Riley over Nick the Brick formerly known as Nick the quick.

Come on, a guy that was a back up in college versus a future all star. A close second was cassell over Van exel.

The "Rimshaker" Rashard Lewis fiasco. I almost cried with him. I attended the same high school as him briefly, and for a couple of years was sure this guy was special. He averaged 30+pts and 10+rebounds in district 20-5A before it split.

I remember 5 teams in that one district alone were ranked in the Chronicle's Greater Houston top 12. By far, he was playing the toughest HS teams in Texas and this isn't counting tournaments where he played the toughest teams around the US. The point was that he COMPLETELY DOMINATED. No one was able to stop him, and I thought this guy was the next KG.

He's well on his way making other youngsters want to be the next Rashard Lewis. Man, that was the second time the rocks blew off a home town star. I really hope they won't do that again. Look for Alton Ford Jr in a few years to be in the same position. Milby HS, 6'10" 260lbs freshman at UH.
