Are the shoulder and knee that is swelling on opposite sides? It sounds like you're issues are mechanical more than anything. You likely have some kind of muscle imbalance and/or a postural issue that's forcing you to strain that shoulder and knee....so tehcnically speaking it could be breaking your body down and it'll only get worse with age... For the OP....i think in general our culture has this bias towards turning 40, as if the body magically breaks down at that age...yet that's barely mid age and many people, at 40, still look and feel 30. I think you may be psychologcially blocking your progress. As it is, your fitness is probably better than the avg 40 yr old. 4 miles and 50 push ups at once isn't anything to scoff at, at any age. I think if you keep at it you'll get back to where you were.
Yes, they are opposite sides but I recovered from the torn rotator cuff with physical therapy. it had been 10 months later that my knee swelled.
My mother went through a similar thing. They found out she had a parathyroid tumor. Had it removed and was back to normal almost immediately. I'd have your thryroid and calcium (parathyroid test) levels checked.
Yes, but it can still be related...there's a certain muscular imbalance/issue that affects opposite sides/limbs due to a myofascial connection they have that travels across your torso in the front and one on the back. Like an X each side. It causes improper movement, which can lead to strain on yuor shoulder and cause a rotator cuff injury. Even if you did rehab to come back from that your shoulder can still be moving improperly...or even if it was rehabbed back properly the knee issue could have already began prior to your cuff injury. The swelling could be the end result of years of improper movement and it finally swelled up too much. If you have good insurance i'd suggest you go to a chiro or a doc with a focus on postural aligment who knows about myofascial issues. A massage therapist certified in rolfing techniques or myofascial release would also be a good start, but for further testing (xrays, scans, etc) you'd need a doc.
Thanks and I will keep that in mind (pun intended.) I will also get my thyroid checked out too at my next physical and have also heard the advice to eat more calcium. I'm lactose intolerant but have been trying to eat more leafy greens. Just curious RV6, are you a physical therapist?
Thyroid and testosterone are just simple blood tests. At your age it ought to be a part of a yearly physical anyway, along with a prostate exam.
nah, i have a degree in Kinesiology, but have done a lot of personal research on physical therapy though, especially about proper aligment and things like that. I'm dealing with my own issue as it is. When i was a teen I had a lot of injuries and i never followed the doc's advice or did rehab, since i was so anxious to get back to playing ball and moving around. Now i'm only 27, but the lack of rehabbing back then screwed up my aligment and overall muscle balance over a decade and i was seeing issues creeping up on me.
I'm 38 and I have been noticing a bit of a decline recently, but I think it is because I am a lazy bum and don't work out at all. 50 pushups? I think I can do 10. 5.5 miles jogging? I get tired after driving 5.5 miles . So I think you are fine . I bought one of these: I put it in front of the TV and put a laptop stand next to it. I hope that will motivate me to work out at least a little bit. I realize that we are reaching the age where we actually have to start taking better care of ourselves.
Dude, you're just getting old!! Haven't hit 40 yet, in my late 30's, but I've noticed when I do get injured, it takes a lot longer to heal/recover than it use to...I try to be conscience of what I do and be careful how I do things to prevent any injury...I agree with starting out with a better diet/being healthier as a starting point... My problem is, well, one of my many problems is sleeping...or better put, waking up from sleep...I can fall asleep fine, but I tend to wake up a couple of times a night, and can usually go back to sleep, but other times, Im just awake...totally sux...A friend of mine in his 50's said he started having sleep problems in his 40's and he continues to have them to this day...
Yeah its kind of sad to reach the age of having to get our butts poked in addition to our balls jiggled at a physical.
I am 51 and a competitive runner. I am in the best shape of my life, so don't get discouraged. You do have to be smarter about how you eat and train.
You could always supplement with HGH as a natural age prevention technique for those above 40. Just go to one of those anti-aging clinics that are popping up everywhere. I'm still in my 20's and I supplement daily with Resveratrol (red wine seed extract for anti aging) and Glucosamine Chondroitin (shark cartilage for joint support). I run about 6 miles daily. Sometimes my joints and back feel the ache after consistent workout routine. I just sit out 2-3 days to rest and I'm on back to proper form again.
what do you mean by 'how' you eat? are you referring to the rate, frequency? just thought saying how was a bit ambiguous. i would say be smarter about what you eat as well, no?
