Let's play "If I was David Stern". Post here what you would change in the NBA if you had absolute powers as commissioner.

    My initial thoughts...
    - Flopping would be fined
    - Establish a true salary cap and profit-sharing (similar to NFL)
    - Any trade that I want can be rescinded (to prevent trades like gasol-kwame)
    - Utah Jazz would have to rename their team so New Orleans can finally have their name back
    - Force Clippers to move to Seattle or Las Vegas.

    What would you do?

I would like to see complete transparency in the referee assignments and grades. Announce refs ahead of time and present a post-game review (done by a third party) of the calls. Officials with bad marks are downgraded or released. Get rid of the old guard, maybe not because they are bad but because there is too much notoriety with them.

But this will never happen, because it's contrary to the ultimate goal of the NBA which is to attract new fans and make money. Same with parity-- vetoing trades to make the top teams stronger goes against what the league wants. They won't admit this, but the results speak for themselves. Detroit/SA in the Finals, even though it was a great Finals, was a nightmare for the league. If they really cared about parity, then every week we'd be seeing different teams on TV, not the same Kobe/Lebron show.

That sort of power would be way too easy to abuse.

Ok, then set up a commission to review trades.

Good observation. So it's always the other team destroying themselves by getting in the penalty... implying Lakers never get obvious favoritism treatment from refs... 2000 Trailblazers, 2002 Kings, then the Tim Donaghy scandal blows up, NBA finally got their wish to ban his book last year, BAM 2010 Celtics, same poopoo all over again.

Why only Lakers? What a coincident!

i agree with JVG that there shouldn't be a foul out rule. as a fan i want to see the best players play. not sit on the bench in foul trouble. also, teams devise strategies to get guys like yao and dwight in foul trouble by barreling into them. it's not fair, and doesn't make any sense.

that said, there should be a penalty for fouling too much or teams would just foul every time the opponent has a layup or a dunk.

so here is my suggestion: the 6th foul, and every personal foul after that, the opposing team receives a technical free throw and possession of the ball. if it's a shooting foul, the opposing team will get the appropriate amount of free throws and receive possession of the ball.

if you think that's too stiff of a penalty then you can tailor it down to just a technical free throw. for fouls 6-8, then a free throw and possession of the ball for all fouls after that.

    1) Make the rules the same for every gamme, ethier let them play physical or finese, just keep it consistent.
    2) Remove 6 teams who don't make alot of money and are consistent bottom feeders.
    3)Hard Cap.
    4) Set a fine if a team doesn't get into the playoffs once every fifteen years.
    5) Decrease the amount of games played in the season.
    6) If a player is waived by a team, they can sign with another team without a waiting period unless the player has just been traded to the team that waived them, then they cannot reign with their old team(i.e Z couldn't resign with the cavs after he was traded to Washington)
    7) End season and playoffs earlier. 48 games, season is form late october to April. Playoffs are best of 5 except for conference finals and league finals, which are best of 7.
    8) Set the draft order by final results, not regular season(e.g Lakers would pick last because they were the champions, currently the Cavs are picking last because they had the best record)
    9) Eliminate 3-second rule
    10) Be stricter about fundamental calls such as traveling
    11) Any player who gets arrested(barring misdemeanor) will be suspended w/ pay until proven guilty, if found guilty player is suspended at least a year w/o pay.
    12)Improve marketing.

if i were stern i would set myself on fire, hang myself off a cliff, drink poison, and shoot myself

but with sterns luck i'll shoot the rope instead and fall into the ocean below which will put out the fire, vomit the poison and then die of hypothermia
