That Yao could be "a beast". I was in the car on the way to lunch and he pretty much just said what everyone else has been writing about, that Yao is a player and not some goofey giant. "Goofey Giant" weren't his words exactly but that was the gist. He definately said "beast" that Yao could be "a beast".

How about we call him "The Beast from the East"

Jime Rome is the biggest Lakers homer who pretends he isn't a Lakers fan. The whole time Pierce was praising Ming all Rome kept asking was "What would he do against a healthy Shaq, Shaq would kill him!" Well yeah Shaq should kill him, Shaq outweighs him by about 50 pounds, and has 10 years of NBA experience. If Shaq doesn't dominate a rookie there's a serious problem, Pierce even said that himself.

Tired of hearing comments like what Mr. Rome said. Who dosen't get eaten up by Shaq...nothing is going to stop him unless it's his toe.

I'm tired of listening to the Ming/Shaq comparisons myself. No one is making comparing how Jay Williams when guarded by Jason Kidd or Gary Payton. No one is asking how well Mike Dunleavy will defend Tracy McGrady. How anyone can compare a 21-year old rookie to a 10-year veteran is beyond me.

It didn't really sound like Rome was all about Shaq. He did ask the question of what would a healthy Shaq do to Yao but it sounded to me like it was a measuring stick for Paul to compare Yao. Paul said that yeah Shaq will really try to make a statment on him but neither Rome or Pierce really acted like Yao wasn't capable of playing with Shaq. Pierce's response was more like, Yao will need to adjust to the banging over an 82 game season but that once he did he would be great and not 'Shaq's gonna destroy him'. It wasn't like that at all.

He gave Yao some serious respect, and Rome was even respectful, in his way.

Ya know what? Trader cut to the nut of the issue. Why in the hell is everyone so damn busy comparing Yao to Shaq, Yao to Wallace, Yao to Cato, Yao to Hakeem, Yao to Wilt??????

Yeah, why didn't someone say, "Yeah, but what will Kidd do to Jay Williams?"

I feel sorry as hell for Yao. Poor SOB. No other #1 draft choice has ever undergone as much scrutiny (see every analysts comments), bedevilment (see some of the posts from the non-convinced), ridicule (remember Cuban's remarks?), standard-setting (again, analysts), or commotion (the world's eyes are upon you), without even having a chance to play a few games?

Did anyone raise this much stink when Chicago and Washington made those highly-speculative lottery choices last year?

What's up with people? Or, in the words of the intellectually-gifted Mrs. Iverson ("AI's mom), "Make it real....."

The comparison isn't unfair, it is just the wrong one. What people should
be asking and looking for is whether Yao Ming can "hold his own" against Shaq. In the early nineties, Shaq was clearly inferior to Olajuwon, but still managed to help his team and show he belonged. The Olajuwon situation was similar (against Kareem) in the early eighties.

Will this trend repeat itself again? We can only hope...

NO ONE can defend Shaq!!! NOBODY! Why the hell would Yao be different at 21 with no pro basketball experience in the US?

A better question is what OTHER center will blow Yao away? Honestly, with the few guys out there, I can't see anyone dominating him or abusing him in the post other than Shaq. But, considering the fact that Shaq abuses EVERYONE, how is that a big deal at all?

Bad News: They won't stop comparing Yao to Shaq.

Good News: He seems to be silencing all those haters who were comparing him to Bradley adn Smits.

I don't know, yesterday Rome was talking about how he loved the comments from Ben Wallace and that Wallace was probably just going to break him in half. When he talked about Ming he said "Well they said that Shawn Bradley would be the greatest NBA center of all time!" Now refresh my memory, who said that Bradley would be the greatest center of all time? I doubt many. And there again with the Shawn Bradley comments. Oh yeah, and he talked about how Shaq would eat him up.

Everybody is asking "Can Yao stop Shaq?" I hear nobody asking "Can Shaq stop Yao?"

Yao won't be able to stop Shaq in his prime. But I bet Shaq is not gonna stop Yao either, after he gets a few months of NBA experience. How is Shaq going to stop a guy 5" taller who can drop 15-footers all day? How is Shaq gonna stop a guy who can put the ball on the floor and spin-move past him to the hoop? The only defensive weapon Shaq has against Yao is using his bulk to push Yao. I can see Shaq fouling out in the 3rd quarter if the Lakers don't double team Yao.

Compared to yesterday then Rome has softened his rhetoric. Can Yao conquer Jim Rome? The more I think about it the less I care. I'm pretty pleased that a player like Pierce is giving Yao love.

Actually if I recall correctly that's exactly what Pierce said, but only because Shaq is practically impossible to match up with.
