I'm not sure the girl really understood the risks. Kids tend to think of themselves as being invincible at that age.
All 16 year olds think they can do anything. It's up to the parents to guide them and help lead them in the right direction. In any case, hope the girl is ok.......
if at 16 you don't understand that sailing the world by yourself is risky then you're stupid. i could understand if maybe she was 10 or something but she's in high school! maybe i'm giving kids too much credit?
Here is the message her family has posted on her blog: http://soloround.blogspot.com/2010/06/abby-is-fine.html
Now that she's alright and she can get some more sales on her official clothing and footwear line http://www.abby16.com/ (to fund her trip, its not like a Lebron shoe deal...) Wouldnt doubt it being that. Could be kinda like the old days when families had a whole bunch of children, and one of them in a sense is "expendable". That if a child succumbs to something, its just "thinning out the herd". Like 18th century where you can expect 1 child out of 8 to die from malaria or something.
Wonder how much of our tax payer dollars the rescue will cost for something that shouldn't be allowed to happen in the first place.
At the very least a fishing boat had to stop its livelihood to go and scoop her up . . . . so they did the right thing and a good thing but it probably cost them a days pay I am sure they will be compensated .. . dunno if it will be by the family though Rocket River
Its a great thing that she is fine. The mast broke. Just one of numerous things that could go wrong regardless of her ability(She also had engine problems given her previous communication.
People complain about governments spending money on food stamps for the poor, education and medical care for illegal immigrants, etc. I am thinking search and rescue operations for individuals who randomly decides to take on risky trips (whether it be sailing, mountain climbing, or what not) would be among the less efficient use of tax dollars (be it American tax dollars or Australian tax dollars). Are these people be required to pay some form of search and rescue "insurance" before taking their trips?
Unfortunately, Wilson was lost when the mast collapsed and could not be rescued. Last seen, Wilson was heading for the plastic garbage island twice the size of Texas. Nooooooo!!!!!! Wilsonnnnnnnnn!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I'm sorry!!!!!!!!!!
They know there is risk, they just choose to believe they can always beat those risks. I was a stupid 16 year old, and I was 10 times the maturity level of my friends.
glad she's ok...and I think I read where she won't be doing a second attempt which is good news...all teenagers think they're bulletproof...
These agencies usually want to take on these tasks as to provide real training for SAR missions. For example, just think if FEMA never ran large scale training scenarios...what could possibly go wrong? In my neck of the woods, we always have regional forest fires for one reason or another. As long as you file a burn permit, then the state will not come after you in the events you accidentally cause a forest fire. Nothing prepares you better than the real thing. Why else do you think America ALWAYS has troops in some hotzone or another.
