Maybe Yao wants his daughter play basketball for the United State in the future.

After dedicating much of his career to furthering Chinese basketball? Not likely. Truth is, I bet he hopes she has no interest in athletics. The man's had how many surgeries in the last five years, again?

Yao's daughter is American. Parents do not have the right to renounce that citizenship. If China refuses to recognize dual citizenship, I don't see how Yao's daughter will be a Chinese citizen until she is old enough to renounce her American citizenship. In order to renounce citizenship, the child has to be able to convince a U.S. diplomat that they fully understand the ramifications of renouncing their citizenship. Parents can't do this for their child.

I foresee no possible situation in which China would not claim Yao's child as a citizen, regardless of her U.S. citizenship status. She's the daughter of a bonafide cultural icon!

Beautifully written post. Very substantive and quite accurate factually. I think per the World Health Organization (WHO) survey the quality of US healthcare is not even ranked in the top ten in the world.

Your wife and yourself were very fruitful, Leeb. Wait until you experience the "enjoyment" of paying to send those kiddos to college!

I could careless what other people say because as a parent, I would choose whatever is good for my kids... I sure that if those people that criticize Yao for making his decision are given the same opportunity , 99.9% of them will definitely grab that opportunity without question ask. For those who say they won't, get real people...

It's been stated already. She's an American. Automatic. She could denounce it when old enough, but come on, that's not going to happen. China does not allow dual citizenship.

I wonder what that survey would say if they only asked multi-millionaires. :)

My 18 yr old just finished her first yr at sfa. She got most of her school paid for in scholarships. If she hadnt lost the love of the game, she wouldve gotten a basketball d-1 scholarship like her pops.

As a matter of fact, Yao and Ye are both the only ones in their families, which means they have rights to give birth to another child, so the citizenship of their second child is not even a concern to them.

The one offspring policy in China only applies to the situation where one of the married couple fails to qualify for the "only one" requirements, then they could only have one child. Apparently, Yao and Ye are not in that category and qualify for that, 2 children for Yao could be a no-brainer.

That's kinda horse **** on the part where you say you can't be loyal to two countries. My parents are from a different country but I was born here and I consider myself a citizen of both since I can speak both languages fluently and know both cultures perfectly. My loyalty is in fact to both countries. If there was a war between the 2 countries I would not be able to choose a side. You might not be able to fathom this but I guess that makes me more of a bad A than you.

u know the government might have more control over people's choice more than here but they arent a complete totalitarian government. At this point in Chinese history they have actually successfully integrated socialism (which is a governmental structure that relies on a central power) with capitalism (which is an economic system that relies on personal choice) and ever since this system started working for them they became a lot more lenient on personal choices as well. as long as the money flows and country prospers the government wont do anything to stop.

which brings me to my point. yao ming bring them money, glory, pride. they will not try to mess with that by forcing his hand. whatever choice yao makes, they will be forced to live with it. because whats the worst the chinese government can do? cancel his citizenship? exile their national hero? there is no way in hell they are even going to get to that point but even if they do, the american government wouldn't mind taking him in. or any other government for that matter.

when you such an assets as yao ming, you have to let him live and give him room to breathe
