I don't like them on myself because nothing is that important or forgettable where I would need to etch it in my skin for eternity. I don't really care what other people do with their bodies but some people do look better than others with tattoos. I think placement has a lot to do with it as well.
I could care less. I love girls who have them on their arms. I HATE the tramp stamp above their butts though. I don't have any because there's nothing important enough for me to get permanently marked yet. When I get kids, I might get their names tattooed on me.
Fully agreed. I thought about it before, but there was not anything I would perm want on me. I find most tattoo's tacky, especially the cookie cutter and faddish tattoos.
I like them, but don't think I'm so married to any one design that I just have to have it permanently etched on my flesh.
eventually i'm getting "mack" tattooed on me somewhere. it's my fiancee's maiden name and the nickname for my sister's baby that died a month before his due date, so it works even if things don't work out between us (which they will, of course).
Why brand yourself with something you weren't born with? There is a Formula: The MORE Tattoos the LESS Education the person has. Tattoos Vary Inversely with Education. You could probably count on your hand the people who don't adhere to that formula. Don't have them, don't want them. No, thank you .
Impressive, well thought out responses. Reasons to get one or not? What I hear a lot: 'Your body is a temple' or age related: 'Too old to get one!' 'What's that going to look like when your skin is all saggy?"

More often that not, I think they ruin the beauty of the human body. A good example I can think of is when I bring my GF to a formal dinner party where she is wearing a little black dress and heels. A tattoo on her arms or shoulders, or even a small one around her ankle, really detracts from the overall look. They can also look pretty "trashy" as they fade or become outdated. I personally know some people, and have heard many second-hand stories of people, who eventually regretted their tattoos. I tend to think the majority of people at some point "grow out of" their tattoo and wish they never had it. And just as an aside: when a girl tells me that she got her tattoo because it is symbolic of something important to her, I would also estimate that 90% of the time her tattoo is something that is generic and stupid. I can, however, actually appreciate the artistic value of a well-done, unique tattoo that actually has some substance to the rational for getting it.
I've talked to a lot of people who've said they were sorry they got their tattoo. When I see a young women with some really nasty or silly tattoo, I can't help thinking they are really going to have regrets someday.
I don't have any. I don't have much problem with them. I must say . . . the reasons behind a tattoo intrigue me. and .. . . Dumb answers make me thing less of the person i.e. a Tattoo of PAWS on your chest . . . a Name on your neck Something under or over the eyes. . . foreign letter in a language you don't speak. Those will always make me pause. I think Placement and reasons for the tattoo . . are important Rocket River
I am one of the only people I know (friends) without a tattoo (we're all late 30s to early 50s in my circle). Seriously...I think I could name 4-5 in a very, very large group of friends who don't have them. That said, I have no problem with tattoos. I have a huge issue with sh***y tattoos, though. Many of my friends have some of the best tats I've ever seen. Having one tattoo artist in our inner-most circle and one named Chris Trevino on the outer fringe doesn't hurt.
That's a careless assumption. I have a college degree and earn a six figure income. I have 10 tattoos and plan on getting more. All of my tattoos have been well thought out and based on a very meaningful parts of my life. (ie. Family and way of life) I think there is a large portion of the population that looks down on people with tattoos before getting to know them. I will admit there are some uneducated people out there that do have tattoos BUT there are just as many if not more uneducated people with unaltered skin out there. Point is don't judge someone before getting to know them. It then becomes a form of racism/sexism/ageism/etc. -E
^ Like I said, I can probably count those people like you on my hand. Maybe I prejudge, but it takes a few moments for that impression of the person to know their education level. Even people WITHOUT college degrees and some tattoos can be polite and courteous or a good, ethical, and moral person. I never said EVERYONE.
Only 2pac and Eminem got away with the greatest tattoos a man can get... Seriously though, I think there overrated. But I understand why people might have them. Eminem for an example, he has a tattoo of his daughter, to remind him everyday why he does what he does. It's his motivation.
pfft...i bet those same people smoke, drink, or overweight. eh, age is irrelevant. i don't think age has anything to do with the decision. they either want one or they don't. when you're saggy, no one looks at you regardless of tattoo or no tattoo. i don't really find tattoos attractive on women. as someone posted earlier, they do take away from their beauty when that person is wearing an outfit that's not covering up the tattoo. still, i don't find anything wrong with them. i definitely don't get the trend tats though...barbed wire, tribal, stars.
