    Steve's Journal

Rookie of the Year Steve Francis talks about hoop camps, the NBA Finals, and going global in his latest journal for AthleteNow

What's up, everyone? Welcome back to my website.

As you might know, I've been busy gearing up for my basketball camp. Growing up, I went to numerous basketball camps myself. This year, I was thinking all season that it might be a good idea to start a camp, first in Houston. Then hopefully one day I could bring it to Maryland. We're really going to stress a lot of fundamentals. A lot of NBA players today lack fundamentals, and that starts from when you're a kid. So we're going to try and get them started on the right foot. If we can do that, I think that will be great. I want the kids to know that we're really there to help them. I was one of the guys who was always at the front of the lectures, listening, willing to learn and taking advice from my peers and the guys who ran the camp. The best camp that I attended was the one at University of Maryland Coach Williams' first year. As a coincidence, I went to school there. Coach Williams actually remembered me from that camp. We're going to have all sorts of fun things. Guest speakers, guys doing demonstrations. A couple of the guys from the Rockets, Cuttino Mobley and Shandon Anderson are going to appear, too.

The last couple of weeks, I've been keeping busy. If you want to make yourself global and marketable, you have to keep busy in the off-season. I like it most of the time, but the travel can make you a little weary. I've been getting jet lag a lot. You're in LA and you're working out at 9 am, and your back east and working out at noon. It's kind of strenuous on the body sometimes, but you've got to do what you've got to do.

Coming up July 22, I'm part of a team that's going to be playing in Japan. I can't wait. I've never been over there, and I really want to see what it's like in Asia. Hopefully it won't be the last time I do it. I've been to Puerto Rico and Hawaii, so I've been off the mainland, but this is my first real international trip. I'm looking forward to checking out some of the new technology they've got over there. Cameras, CD players, video games. I like having my toys.

I was kind of angry watching the NBA Finals, because I thought that we could probably be there. But this year we had a lot of turmoil with injuries and things like that. Me and Cuttino talked after every game. I thought the series went the way that it should have went. I thought the Lakers would take it in 4, but Indiana made some miraculous shots. Shaq did a great job of leading his team. Even when Kobe went down, he maintained his scoring and rebounding.

I'm not a big-time golfer, but I did watch some of the US Open. Tiger was phenomenal. The only thing that can stop him is rain.

I hope you're all enjoying the summer. Thanks for stopping by!

    Steve

    thx.

I'm glad Steve is doing all this interesting stuff over his summer. Francis and Mobley talked after every Finals game... also shows how close they are.

But to tell you the truth, the only thing I hope he does over the summer is WORK ON THAT MID-RANGE GAME... that way he'll be unstoppable.

If he is as busy as it sounds, I don't see much time to work on his game. Hope I'm wrong.

    from the above posted link:

"I feel sorry for whomever Vancouver picks this year," said Francis, who grew up in Takoma Park. "I am going to call whoever it is. I have to get their telephone number."

Just let it die Steve! My respect for him just took a serious nose dive.

Isn't it sad and ironic that a guy who wants to make himself "global and marketable" thinks it's a nifty idea to slag a whole city? Stevie, you may be the Rookie of the Year on the court but you're the John Rocker of the Year in Vancouver. Stromile Swift loves Vancouver, Kenyon Martin spent three extra days here and his woman wants him to buy a house in West Vancouver, Marcus Fizer likes it here, etc. If you're going to phone these guys up and tell them how bad it is, you'll just make a bigger idiot of yourself than you already did in print. Give your head a shake and grow up.

GO BACK TO CANADA YOU SILLY FREAKS!!!! STEVE, PREACH IT!!!!

Don't give me that crap you guys. Could you imagine actually calling Big Country your teammate? He so poor...he doens't try at all. I think NBA players should refuse to step onto the floor with people like that. Go watch some hockey!
