"They'll push him out to the three-point line," power forward Elton Brand said, smiling.

Proving that Yao, bound for the Houston

Rockets, is at least strong enough to carry a target on his back.

"From what we hear, he's a great player when he's been playing the talent he's been playing against," Wallace said. "But the NBA is a whole different level. ... I think I heard a couple of guys who said, Let's beat him up and see what he's got.'

i hope that the US centers give Yao all they got so that yao can learn what it's like before the season starts...and i really really hope Yao holds his own, to show that he belongs and to shut ben wallace up.

I like this comment from the article:

"Even Kwame Brown, who made the jump from high school a year ago, wasn't this much of a curiosity before going to the Washington Wizards because he had at least experienced life inside during pickup games and summer-league contests."

I'm sure that whoever Kwame played in his pick up games is much better than the players that Ming has played against in say the 2000 Olympics with team USA and no doubt many times better than Ming's team mates Wang Zhi Zhi and Bateer. Those guys are just in the NBA. And of course Ming played against Moses Malone too.....another player who was nowhere near the NBA caliber of Kwame's pick-up game opponents.

    This column is just FUNNY.

    More quotes from the column:

"Yao, meanwhile, has never played outside of his native country"

Really? Guess he don't count the Olympics or international tournaments like the one he just played in Turkey. Hmm.

"Williams might sit out Thursday against China "

Damn, Yao can't stuff JWill if he's on the bench. JWill is going to have to stay No. 1 on the list of people I wanna see Ming stuff and dunk over.

"Now comes All-Star Jermaine O'Neal, Defensive Player of the Year Ben Wallace, veteran inside presence Antonio Davis and shot blocker Raef LaFrentz.

"They'll push him out to the three-point line," power forward Elton Brand said, smiling."

Guess Brand's gotta be added to the list. And Raef is gonna push him out to the three? Gotta see that.

    -WORLD BASKETBALL CHAMPIONSHIPS-
U.S. gets 1st look at Yao tonight:
Players are eager to give 7-5 Chinese star a taste of the NBA.

    August 22, 2002

SAN FRANCISCO -- Already starting to nurture a chip on its collective shoulder, the U.S. World Basketball Championship team gets to take it on the biggest possible target tonight.

Poor Yao Ming. Wrong place, wrong time.

Then again, he might as well get used to it.

Yao, the No. 1 pick in the June 26 NBA draft, leads the Chinese national team against the United States in an exhibition game tonight at The Arena in Oakland, Calif.

Officially the game is an exhibition, a tuneup for the world championship that begins in Indianapolis on Aug. 29. Unofficially, and more interestingly, it is Yao's debut against NBA players.

That's why about 17,000 fans are expected for tonight's game, a figure reflective of the Bay Area's widespread Chinese population and the intrigue that surrounds Yao. It's also why a large international media contingent is expected, and why the Houston Rockets, who drafted Yao, have flown their media relations director to the game.

The U.S. team members most likely to bang bodies with Yao are looking forward to initiating him into their exclusive fraternity.

"The No. 1 pick always has a huge bull's-eye on his back," the Pacers' Jermaine O'Neal said. "We're going to play harder than we normally would (in an exhibition), I think."

Yao isn't just another top draft pick, however. He's the third player to come to the NBA from China, and surely far from the last, but for now it's as if he's dropping in from another planet. He's 7-5, and blessed with a rare combination of strength and agility for his size. Few NBA fans or players have seen this international man of mystery play, other than in brief video highlights.

"The only time I've seen him was the day of the draft, when they showed a couple of clips," O'Neal started to explain.

"A couple of days ago he told me he was going to dunk on your (butt)," teammate Shawn Marion jokingly interrupted.

That seems to exemplify the competitive spirit the U.S. players are taking into this game. While far from obsessed with Yao, they're looking forward to challenging him. It's not unlike the way Michael Jordan and Scottie Pippen targeted Toni Kukoc in the 1992 Olympics after Kukoc had been drafted by the Bulls amid great hype.

China's team, which lacks capable guard play, isn't likely to challenge in the world championship. But Yao could. He scored 17 points, hitting all six field-goal attempts and all five foul shots in China's 94-66 loss to Canada in an exhibition game in Vancouver, British Columbia, last week. But he also talked afterward of his difficulty in muscling Canadian Richard Anderson, who at 6-6 and 250 pounds is midsized by NBA standards.

That admission of weakness surprised the U.S. players.

"It's just getting started," said Ben Wallace, who was named the NBA's Defensive Player of the Year last season after leading the league in blocked shots and rebounds. "He's going to have to face that every night in the league. Every night he's going to have somebody trying to push him around."

U.S. coach George Karl said he's not putting any special emphasis on Yao in his preparations for tonight's game. He's more interested in establishing some chemistry within his team, which has only 10 days of practice and two exhibition games before tournament play begins.

Karl said after Wednesday's workout at the University of San Francisco that he plans to mix up his starting lineups, at least through the first few tournament games. He designated Pacer Reggie Miller as the only player certain to start tonight, and will figure out the rest later.

Karl and other USA Basketball officials say they have been pleased with the effort and teamwork shown by the players in practice so far. Perhaps it's to their advantage that some of them feel slighted by all the talk about the NBA stars who aren't here, rather than those who are.

"For some reason people think we're not that good," O'Neal said.

"It upsets us a little bit when people talk like we're the jayvee team. We can play against anybody. We just have to show the world what we're talking about."

I hope they do beat Yao up, better for him to take his medicine now than later. The sooner Yao learns about the competition and the amount of work he'll need to put in the weight room to bang with them, the better. Too many people here want to baby Yao. I know we're all excited to have him, but it's a shame that people here want Yao to have special treatment. I think of Kwame and how even though he was pretty green in basketball experience, everybody said he was so mature and acted like more of an adult than college players. Of course, after the season, we learn about how clueless he was, that he didn't even know how to hang a suit. I don't expect Yao to have problems like that in his personal life, but I think he will in his basketball life. Basically, anything that will encourage/force Yao to bulk up is fine by me.
