I have no link, but my wife just called to tell me that the "Thai Nazi" (please understand, I use that term with the utmost affection) had a massive heart attack and passed away last night. Very sad day for me. His Tom Kha Gai was the best I've had in this world, and his green curry was the best I've had outside of Thailand.
He was the somewhat surly gentleman who ran Kanomwan on Telephone road. His wife actually does the cooking, but he was the face of the restaurant as he took everyone's order.
Aw man that sucks. I was always afraid of him at Kanomwan but he was never nearly as bad as I'd heard. Or maybe I just always caught him on good days. RIP.
My family and I just had dinner there 3 weeks ago. I didnt know they called him this. We were laughing because it was a gamble everytime he came to the table. He was nice and then he acted pissed. He got mad because my daughter ordered eggrolls after I did and his response was "you want more?!" and rolled his eyes. We all giggled as he walked away. He greeted everyone at the door. Food was awesome.
it's been there for at least 20 years. i'd pass by it everyday when i went to Jackson Middle school. i've only been there once but enjoyed it. the hours are really weird and it was hot inside but damn, the clientele's cars in the parking lot were certainly out of place in that area.
Oh man...how awful. The Thai Nazi was a legend I wrote a review about the place on Yelp which got review of the day once. http://www.yelp.com/user_details_re...agestart=10&userid=6bZRUzczx4vx6fxHm7OtMg Second page here. Much love for the Thai Nazi
Sad day indeed... dude was a trip. He was famous for his surly attitude, but it was all part of the cool, odd experience of that place. He closed down the restaurant for a month every year to take his family back to Thailand. Pretty cool for them, but very disappointing if you drove across town for the food only to find a note on the door - closed until January! Konomwan is one of the best Thai restaurants in town... I sure hope they keep it open.
NOOOOOooooooo!!!!!! I just ate there a couple of weeks ago! That Tom Ka Gai is like nothing else in the world. When we were there, we asked how his grandson was doing (his grandson would occasionally work cash register) and it was the first time I saw him smile and he actually glowed with pride. This is sad news.
We need to organize a Clutchfans meetup at Kanomwan to pay our respects to this great man and enjoy some delicious food.
