There is plenty of evidence that mar1juana smokers have a higher incidence of lung cancer. There was some controversy in the past because researchers had a hard time adjusting for those that smoked cigarettes, but there have been plenty of epidemiological studies now that link mar1juana smokers and lung cancer.
I don't think the intensity of use has been defined, but I doubt experimenting with it is really going to cause any long term effects with regards to lung cancer.

Exactly. Cigarettes and mar1juana do share some of the same irritants and carcinogens. But those same studies you mentioned admit that even if there is a relation between mar1juana and lung cancer, those risks are greatly reduced in that a mar1juana smoker rarely (if ever) smokes as much as a typical tobacco smoker.

i tried 20x last night and it was the most surreal experience of my life. it was almost like, in an instant, i was transported to an alternate universe, a dream perhaps, just a completely different place in a different time. i was terrified, and i kept saying "this is not possible" over and over again (although in actuality i was just blabbering, i think). i felt immobile. shards of colors on everything in the room started to fall away. i heard the taunting voice of my mother and everything seemed as though it was covered in pillows, as if everything in my life was contained in an insane asylum or something. my legs and arms wouldn't work, and because i was sitting on my bed, i felt like i was swimming in the bed (not as cool as it sounds). it felt like the most ****ed up, trippy dream ever. then i slowly began to realize i had smoked salvia, and came down. the whole thing probably lasted 2 minutes at most, and afterward i could barely remember loading it and smoking it. for an hour or so i was so mad at myself for smoking it, but i can't believe how real the visions felt. i truly felt like i was in a dream, like i was using that *part* of my brain for the very first time in my waking life.

honestly i'll probably try it again, but only with a much weaker hit.

"The largest study of its kind has unexpectedly concluded that smoking mar1juana, even regularly and heavily, does not lead to lung cancer.

The new findings "were against our expectations," said Donald Tashkin of the University of California at Los Angeles, a pulmonologist who has studied mar1juana for 30 years. "

I agree there is some controversy. Check out this study below if you are interested:

    http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/18238947

Basically the majority of evidence has pointed to increased risk of lung cancer in people who are chronic smokers of any substance, mar1juana not withstanding. There are definitely conflicting studies like the one your link discusses.
I do seriously doubt if someone smokes every once in awhile that there is a serious increased risk of lung cancer.

Why the hell not? It was a cool story, bro. Relax, brochacho.

Not that I'd ever do it because I shudder at the thought of not being in full control of myself.

My college roommate had a friend who tripped out on LSD at a rave. Ended up being held down by three cops because he freaked out after losing his group.

Definitely get a baby sitter. Things can veer from heaven to hell pretty quickly.

Could you please post the links to these studies you speak of. This is a subject that I am interested in, but I have been unable to find much of anything pointing to a direct link between mar1juana and cancer.

I found one relatively small study from New Zealand, that seemed to indicate there might be a some risk for very heavy long term smokers, but I would like to see the studies you are referring to also.

Edit: I just saw your response to jordnnnn above. That's the study I was talking about. Do you have anymore than that? You made it sound like you had seen more than one study. Thanks.

Alright, time for me to actually share my experiences.

The first time I did salvia, I was with two other friends and I hit it first. The lighting was not too bright and Groove Armada playing in the background at low volume, with a track that was mid-tempo. Within 5 seconds of exhaling out my window, I started going off into this other world. Even though my eyes were wide open and staring at the window, I lost consciousness of reality and it began feeling as if I was sitting on a train looking out the window. Moments from my childhood, ranging from important events to minuscule ones such as my elementary school building, started to flash past. I couldn't hear the music anymore and I also started hearing my family and friends speaking. That's about all I remember of it although I'm sure more went on. At no point did I freak out or try to stand up. There was a bit of hysterical laughter for no reason but that's common for beginners; it hasn't happened since.

The interesting thing to me about Salvia is that it operates through binding to opioid receptors. Specifically kappa opioid receptors. (IIRC, there are three main types of opioid receptors -> mu, kappa, and delta.) Morphine works mostly on mu opioid receptors, but binds very weakly to kappa. So when people are in hospital on very high amounts of morphine and they start hallucinating, the Salvia divinorum you people are smoking is probably a pretty analogous thing.

And my personal pet theory that I've been holding for a while is that a cascade of endorphins released by the body to kappa opioid receptors are the source of near-death experiences. Specifically, one of the earlier comments about the user seeing themselves in the third person seemed pretty relevant, when so many near death out of body experiences talk about floating outside your body and seeing yourself on the operating room table.
