As someone who generally believes in the theory that you can't pass up on talent, I'm curious how others here think. The theoretical scenario would similar to Bosh's. That is, he's a FA, and the Rockets will need to give up a package similar to Bosh's(Hill, Budinger maybe, picks, salary fillers).

For reference, T-Mac's stats with Houston(points/rebounds/assists highlighted).

Season Age Tm G GS MP FG FGA FG% 3P 3PA 3P% FT FTA FT% ORB DRB TRB AST STL BLK TOV PF PTS

Personally, I'd do it. I think circumstances have a lot to do with how history view a player. Imagine if Rudy T never coached the Rockets, and Hakeem ends his career here or elsewhere without a ring. Where would he rank in history? If Boston never traded for Ray Allen and KG, how would people view Paul Pierce?

To me, player judgment tend to be swayed circumstances outside their control. For that reason, I feel T-Mac tend to get too much of the blame for our failures. Despite being the best and most exciting Rockets player in the last decade. I also want to make the parallel to Bosh moving forward, who basically is in the same circumstance up in Toronto.

    Of course,

05, 07, 08 he was still one of the best players in the league.

We just didnt have the depth to get it done.

Absolutely, if it meant we would get T-mac's first 4 seasons here for the next 4 seasons aka Yao's window. We would have to trade away Kevin Martin too though...

Put T-mac from his first 4 years here with this good group of role players and a healthy Yao, we'd be championship contenders again. And if we get one more impact player after a trade or high draft pick, we'd be the favorites to win it all again, just like we were before last season started.

It's too bad T-mac's prime coincided with Yao's development years/injuries and by the time Yao was a beast and the supporting cast improved, T-mac's career was basically over.

NO, because if that really happened, then someone like OP himself will start a thread says "With quitting hindsight, if Houston T-Mac was available now, would you want him?"

sometimes fans are just... amazing. NBA where amazing fans happens.

Put him with Yao, Brooks, Scola, Martin, Ariza, Budinger.

That would be an interesting team, to say the least.

I think we found out that TMAC was all talent and no heart but...

No way would I pass that up. He was just too good back then. You put him on this Rockets team and we would not be stopped.

Pretty surprised at the early results. Especially because how much flak, even on this board, about T-Mac being a 2nd round virgin.

And I think this poll can stretch to be one about Bosh. I know Bosh isn't the caliber a player as T-Mac. But he's been more durable, and big men generally remain more healthy and effective with age than wing players. Really, in the end, talent is talent. And you put up with the problems of extreme talent(high salary, attitude, high cost in trade) simply because.

Of course we would trade for him, you just get rid of him a lot earlier, not at the end of his contract.

Exactly. With perfect hindsight you trade for him, build the team differently, and then dump him in '08.

Man, T-Mac in Orlando was a beast! He had one of the highest PERs in history, top 5 for a player over the year, maybe top 3.

In this team we would absolutely devastate.

I'd like to challenge somebody that voted 'no' to lay their arguments out on the table.

Disclaimer: I don't care how much you hate him. Hate him all you want -- that's not what the OP nor myself are asking. If you voted 'no' please explain yourself using basketball sense. Tell me why this idea wouldn't be smart for the Houston Rockets to consider.

Glad this poll is what it is.

Tmac pissed me off bad, but hell that much talent for the next 3-4 years with actual help around him would make the Rockets a TOUGH team to beat.

    Kmart is no 04 Tmac.

I just think what 04 Tmac would bring the the table, is a guy who can finish the game and a go to guy down the stretch more than anything.

Stats mean little to me because you have to factor in that Tmac had to fight off double and triple teams a lot more than Kmart ever has to.

he deserves all the flak he got and then some.

but at that given point in time, we had to get rid of steve francis.

t-mac is still a loser, but at least he's still in the league.
poor steve never figured it out as he got older.
players like Cassell and Nash get it.

Getting T-mac did teach us all valuable lessons.
That scoring is not the most important stat, that a scoring champion is meaningless if he can't lead by example on both ends of the court.
That durability and dedication go hand in hand.

I'm glad we got T-mac. Because it makes me appreciate Olajuwon that much more. It makes me proud that I care about the Rockets that much more. It makes me realize that defense and toughness are more important than jacking up 3 pointers. That our best player and our coach, Rudy T, were on the same page and care about each other and the team.

Thank you T-mac for letting us see the difference between a former scoring champ and a real MVP. Thanks for showing us the difference between a nightmare and a DREAM.

must be the offseason. i love my boy tmac, but let it go.

but for the OP, i'm sad we didn't surround tmac with more talent when he got here. if he had the group of role players we have now (even if you take out kevin martin and a few players) with yao, we go to the finals on the regular.
