For a new club which is determined to play the true game of Basketball it should have three players to build around:-
    a) A pass First Point Guardwho isa playmaker first and an excelent scorer second.
    b) A tall Center who can play both ends of the court, this player should also be a second playmaker a she gets double teamed.
    c) A Coach who is a great coach on both ends of the court and known how to blend the strengths of his players into a team game. :p

Center. Look at Dwight. He's not as good as Lebron or Kobe at their position and yet he has led a pretty mediocre team to back to back Eastern Conference finals. Plus, it's easier to surround a franchise center with other parts

It's easy to get wing players.

Poll answer, IMO: C > PG >>> all other positions.

With the new rules you have to have great guard play.
    The lakers: Kobe, sf/pg
    The pistons: billups
    The heat: wade gaurd
The Spurs: Duncan, but parker and ginobli were huge.
    The celtics: PP, gaurd

I agree, but I would still rather build a team where a center is the best player, with the other four being average.

    Howard / Yao
    Haslem
    Ariza
    Von Wafer
    Wesley Matthews

will probably be able to win more games than

    Gortat
    Haslem
    Ariza
    Wade
    Wesley Matthews

A center who can keep scoring on you all night in the low post until he's tripple teamed.

Shaq and Pau Gasol aren't getting enough credit. Shaq was very arguably the most important player on those Lakers teams, and prior to acquiring Gasol, Kobe was making trade demands. Kobe is a great player, but he doesn't win without a dominant big man.

    It can go either way.

Yes, you kinda need an all star perimeter player.

But the thing is, you need a good inside-out game. It's easy to get the 'out', but the 'in' is what every franchise that's ever drafted an Eddy Curry was chasing.

And don't just think about this offensively - the biggest impact a big has is in stopping those guards on their way to the basket. A C can neutralize part of an SG's game, but it doesn't really happen the other way around.

Garnett is not a big man...he is an outside playing PF/SF....

And Gasol, really? I mean he could not lead anyone anywhere.

You need to look at who LED the team, not just that they had a decent big man.

Michael Jordan & Kobe Bryant have a lot of rings.....and Wade even got one for Shaq.

The NBA has changed, the zone and no touching on the perimeter make it a more perimeter oriented league.

It is why Yao can't average 25ppg...because it is legal to zone him....in the past he would have been a 30ppg player......

    Absolutely wrong.

Centers will always be the best cornerstones of a franchise. Just look at the draft selections.

In 2001, the top 3 picks were Kwame Brown, Tyson Chandler, and Pau Gasol. In 2002, Yao was picked first. In 2003, you had Darko going ahead of Carmelo, Bosh, and Wade. In 2004, Dwight Howard and Emeka Okafor were the top 2 picks. In 2005, Bogut was picked first. In 2006, it was Bargnani and Aldridge. In 2007, it was Oden.

These are all centers or pfs who have the potential to play center.

The only reason the NBA is currently a perimeter oriented league is b/c this current era of centers is weak.
