I almost can't believe this story, Eto is going to quit his countries WC squad because Millla calls him out!? Talk about being sensitive, how can you put someones comments above the honor of representing your country in the biggest stage of them all? Hell he is the captain of the team... but Milla really picked the wrong time to say these things, sounds bitter, he knows Eto idolized him, why say such crap so close to the WC.

Eto'o quit threat over Milla criticism

Cameroon captain Samuel Eto'o has hit back at criticism from the country's striking legend Roger Milla, adding that his participation in the World Cup could now be in doubt.

Milla claimed earlier this week that Eto'o had "brought lots to Barcelona and Inter Milan but never anything to the Cameroon team", but Eto'o - who won the Champions League with Inter to add to his two triumphs with Barca in 2006 and 2009 - dubbed Milla "bitter".

"People should respect me and they must shut up, really shut up, because playing in the World Cup quarter-finals is not the same as winning the World Cup,'' he told Canal Plus. "It is always before tournaments that bitter people wake up. What has he [Milla] done? He hasn't won the World Cup... And then you wonder, 'are they my people?'. Are they really my people?''

Eto'o then made the stunning claim that he may not play for his country again and raised questions over whether he would make the trip to South Africa this summer.

"Is it worth me going to the World Cup?" he asked on the sidelines of an exhibition match in Paris. "I've still got some days to think about it but I'll see if my taking part is important because I don't need this in my career."

With four goals in five games at the age of 38 in Italia '90, Milla led Cameroon to the quarter-finals [the first African side to get that far] and is seen as the best African striker of his generation.

I can't believe Eto'o would do this. Hell, it should be a chip on his shoulder and make him want to go into South Africa and eclipse Milla's legacy.

This type of pettiness has no place in the World Cup and I'm sure he'll hear it back home in Cameroon if he does let his emotions get the best of him.

That was Gary Lineker! By the way, once Germany is out of the tournament, I'll probably root for Holland...omg, what's wrong with me .

They may have been "live", but there was a lag, I recall, of about 3 to 4 seconds... I recall chanting GooOooOoool and some people at work watching on ESPN were all "What? Who? Oh, they scored NOW." I think it was 2006... or maybe it was 2002... but I think I remember a huge amount of time in lag that was very noticeable.

Just stop being sensitive, Samuel. Listen to Roger Milla and SHUT UP and PLAY. :p

Dempsey is playing like garbage, he is giving the ball away up front....we are playing tentatively and they have too much space to move in the midfield, the USA is chasing instead of pressuring.

What a goal! Findley changing the game for the U.S. -- playing like he's out to prove the doubters wrong.

Excellent second half for the U.S. My thoughts:
    - Keep Dempsey in left-midfield; start Findley
    - Torres looked excellent, Clark and Fielhaber were useless
    - Borstein should never see playing time. Ever.

It'll be interesting to see who pairs next to Bradley but right now, either Torres or Edu. Defense looks ok with Boca-Gooch-DeMeritt-Cherundolo.

    Have a great Memorial weekend!

Couldn't agree more, I think Holden needs to be considered for that central midfield spot alongside Bradley as well. But yeah it is ridiculous how overmatched Bornstein looks against any and every competition.

In my book, Bradley needs to be benched. I think he is no where near starter material right now...

I'm really happy that football (soccer) seems to be catching on more on this board.

What? No way, he is one of our best midfielders.

I want him and Torres on the pitch ...all game long.

WOW. I read on Esp'n that Torres changed the entire game and created enough spaces create plays in the middle. Torres SHOULD start ALL games for USA. If no, then USA has less chances of winning any of the games in South Africa. Hopefully Bradley realizes what Torres can do... he's probably learned that style from playing in Mexico...

Soooo...which teams are realistic contenders for the title?

    Here's my take:

    Tier 1:

Spain - they were the best team in the world for the past few years. On the other hand, they have never won anything at world cups

Argentina - they have Messi. Enough said. On the other hand, their coach is Maradona.

Brazil - always in the running.

Netherlands - fantastic players, play beautiful football. Never won anything except 1988 Euros, though.

    Tier 2:

Italy - they always have a good defense and are tough to beat. Unattractive brand of football, though. Defending world champions, so they must be considered a contender, although I don't think they will be able to come close to defending their title.

Germany - even with Ballack injured and even when nobody expects them to, they almost always seem to do well at world cups.

France - they have Ribery, Henry, etc. - but a terrible coach and it probably won't be enough.

Portugal - they have Ronaldo and some good players, but I strongly doubt they will play a role. But just because they have Ronaldo, I'm mentioning them.

    -----

That's it - I think everyone else doesn't have any chance at all to win the world cup.

I think you are probably right, but I am going to wait it out until just before the tourney to make predictions, could be injuries, last minutes subs lots of stuff.

As for team USA, I think Ching is better than Altidore.....Jose has no skill with the ball at all....
