Any Jazz fans in here? The music, not the pos basketball team. Any suggestions on some popular jazz songs/artists I should take a look at? I'm trying to broaden my music horizion, and while I have always enjoyed a little Jazz, I don't really have any jazz cds. Thanks!
Only Jazz I listen to is Lisa's solo on the opening of The Simpsons. Utah Jazz?......what a f@g name.
Charles Mingus Eric Dolphy Charlie Parker John Coltrane Thelonious Monk Art Tatum Max Roach Dannie Richmond Buddy Rich Duke Ellington Sun Ra
Could you give an example of something you like? There are many kinds of jazz. My screen name is taken after one of my favorite jazz saxophonists, Cannonball Adderley.
Not to knock it off or anything, but I went to a Jazz show once... I think a Japanese group, Quazimode, was on. I don't understand Jazz' sophistication I guess, cus all the members of the group sounded like they were playing solo's and everything was just mixed in together. Really confusing.
I like Monk, Mingus, Mehldau, Metheny and Bill Evans. I'm big on piano trios and horns (for the most part) aren't my thing.
I hate THE JAZZ. I like JAZZ. What ever happened to 95.7 The Wave?!?!?!? Are there any stations to listen to this smooth music?
XM/Sirius radio has a great jazz channel. I love their Sunday night dixieland slot. I really hate any jazz that has elements of free-jazz. Nothing more annoying than some chump playing a saxophone with random notes.
I have to echo the futants and jo mama's posts. I'm not into vocal jazz but I love instrumental jazz, especially bop and fusion. I also like some free jazz but it has been harder to get into (for obvious reasons). Bop Charlie Parker Dizzy Gillespie Miles Davis John Coltrane Horace Silver Freddie Hubbard Lee Morgan Art Blakey Sonny Rollins Thelonious Monk Fusion Miles Davis John McLaughlin/Mahavishnu Orchestra Chick Corea's Return to Forever Tony Williams' Lifetime Larry Coryell Herbie Hancock's Headhunters Also some Frank Zappa and Soft Machine although they are considered more rock than jazz but "Hot Rats" and "Third" are incredible jazz rock albums. Free Jazz Ornette Coleman Sun Ra Albert Ayler Pharaoh Sanders Dave Holland Sonny Sharrock (if you can find any of his stuff) late era Coltrane
Great track off of Oliver Nelson's "The Blues and the Abstract Truth": <object width="480" height="385"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/5NfFWebvjSM&hl=en_US&fs=1&"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/5NfFWebvjSM&hl=en_US&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="480" height="385"></embed></object> Eric Dolphy, Bill Evans, Freddie Hubbard, Paul Chambers and Oliver Nelson all on one track? Yes, please.
Vocal Jazz Sara Gazarak Jane Monheit Trumpeters Winton Marsalis Arturo Sandoval These 4 are my favorites.
I totally agree. Saying you like Jazz is like saying you like Rock but there is a big difference between Primus and Coldplay. Still some pretty good lists compiled by some of the other posters as an introduction. One other name I would add is Dave Brubek who pioneered the cool sound of Jazz. <object width="480" height="385"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/kc34Uj8wlmE&hl=en_US&fs=1&"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/kc34Uj8wlmE&hl=en_US&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="480" height="385"></embed></object>
Honestly, I have no idea where to begin. I'll hear some jazz on tv, the radio, bars, etc, but wont pay attention to the artist. I should try and find a CD titled "The Best of Jazz", that should help solve my problem, lol. Thanks everyone for your input, time to start figuring out which I like.
