Hey, I got my lil cube at the new place, and its pretty drab so far, gray chair, gray desky thingy, beige monitors and gray/blue "walls" to stick stuff onto ... oh yeah, and a gray shelf with a tube light under it ... a lot like Office Space, altho I have a somewhat better view. So, I've been looking for some things to make the environment more workable and less dry. I thought I'd ask how your office is setup, what have you done, what ideas do you like ... ? Later ... --rockit
Sounds like you need some workspace flair! 15 items, minimum. Personally, at home (I just got a new job, so I haven't redecorated my desk there), I've got: A Blossom (as in Powerpuff Girls, not Mayim Bialik) keychain A Buttercup keychain (Bubbles is a wuss -- she gets no love from me) A stuffed Reptar (from Rugrats), from whose arms #1 and #2 hang A Scott Walker (RW, NSH) bobblehead A Lego Qui-Gon Jinn A Lego Darth Maul, fighting #5 A Lego version of Darth Maul's bike, where #6 rests A Pugface (from Robocop the TV Series) action figure Pugface's tripod-mounted energy cannon, or some such A foam sword in the style of the Titans' secondary logo, given out at a Ten-Jax MNF game Amiga Graphics, Inside And Out (very useful from my web-design job) A lapel button from the Mac OS 8 launch A Gumby doll [/list=1] None of these are in their packaging, though. I saw Toy Story 2! For the pièce de resistance (French, "piece of resistance"): The "Great Guards" collection (a set of 4) of Headliners figurines. They're about 4" tall, with half of that being their head. I've got Van Exel (in his LAL days), Miller (whose jersey has the Old Navy stripes, but the FloJo lettering), Drexler (in Rockets blue), and Sprewell (in the current GS outfit). Latrell's also propping up a section of the cardboard backing of the packaging labeled . . . wait for it . . . "/!\ WARNING: CHOKING HAZARD"
my office has a rockets red glare to it! there's a big framed poster of the 1994 squad with ticket stubs from the playoff games that year matted in red that is huge...on another wall is a signed cover of the Believe It Again publication the Chronicle put out, signed by Drexler...there's an Hakeem autographed ball on my credenza...along with a Bagwell autographed baseball and a Frank Thomas autographed baseball...and a ball from opening night of Enron Field...and on the wall across from my desk is a long panoramic shot of Enron Field taken exactly at the first pitch from Octavio Dotel to Doug Glanville...you can see me up in the pavillion deck above the bullpen boxes with my wife (you can see the colors of our shirts anyway!!) ...on my desk is a little ceramic model of Enron Field with a retractable roof...my diplomas and my law license hang to my right, to the side of my desk...and two ceiling to floor windows are behind me...i can't work without windows!
my office is pretty much identical to the ones in office space. and for some reason i'm supposed to take care of the cockroach problem by my desk...j/k yeah, it's very plain and i don't really do anything.
What ever you do, maximize COLOR. While I was at Frito-Lay I had every (well, almost) single serving size bag they had in it's international portfolio. I had more company because of the color than what report somebody wanted. I even had them sticking above the cube...attracking people for no reason. I remember going to Hasbro for an interview, and man, that was impressive...color everywhere. RR
