I dislike Amare mostly because of his lackluster defensive play. He has the physical tools to be an excellent defender but none of the basketball IQ or desire to do so. He is a terrible one on one defender and a sub par rebounder. His help defense and shot blocking is not good either.

He's a great offensive player, and I don't agree with those who say that it's Steve Nash. He scored a ton of points with Marbury early in his career. He's just a soft player on the defensive side of the ball.

Why does anyone root for anyone?

    Hometeam. Easy to understand.

There is usually something you admire in them . . .
whether it is in their game or personality

While Mugsy Bogues wasn't the most talented guy
I admired that he was 5'3 and made it to the NBA.
    I rooted for him.
I rooted for Dr J ... cause well . . HE WAS DR FRICKING J!!!!

I rooted against Karl Malone. . .cause. .well . . HE WAS KARL FRICKING MALONE

I have no issue for or against Amare

I do admire anyone that betters themselves in this life.

Everyone goes through things in their childhood but I would not say everyone has a difficult childhood. Well even if that is true some go through way more.

There is no homerism. Scola has more skill. Amare is like 100 times more athletic than scola though. I dont know who compared him to kevin mchale. thats just weird. All I am saying is that I will take the more skilled player vs the more athletic. Very rarely in the NBA do you a player with both qualities. Thats what a makes a superstar like Kobe, LBJ, etc. And there is no way that amare is a superstar.

The only reason I root for Amare is because he is playing against the Lakers. :p

Okay, I admire how he overcome the odds in his background. But like someone has pointed out, there are many players who fit that bill.

I could be wrong, but he comes across like a me-first kind of guy (both on and off the court). That's why I don't care much about him.

I stil remember the time when Steve Francis gave Amare a forearm check to Amare's neck and Amare just kind of backed down and let it slide. He probably could've wrecked Steve's life but he played it cool. I don't root for the guy but I don't hate him either.

This is NOT the reason why Rockets fan dislike Amare. I guarantee you that if he had found the self-mute button years ago, he wouldn't "catch a lot of hate."

If you look at some of the most beloved sports figures to play for Houston, you will find them to have some of these key characteristics: hard working, humble, talented, a big heart (i.e. Dream, Earl Campbell, Nolan Ryan). There is no denying how talented Amare is, and it's great that he made good from a hard childhood. But this doesn't excuse his excremental attitude and lack of a consistent high motor.

Amare is a very skilled player. He's not the same athetically as he was in his first few seasons before his knee operation. He has a very good face up game and jump shot. His jump shot is probably better than Scola's and has a bit more ranger. True he is still wayyyyy more atheltic than scola

First of all im going to go ahead and say thanks for sharing my exact thoughts regarding amare stoudemire. In my opinion he is the reason im still watching the nba playoffs all the way from mexico through atdhe.net. I am a diehard rockets fan and have been for as long as i can remember. I have no regrets selecting yao ming with the first overall pick but there is just something about amare that makes him one of my fav five players in the league, his tenacity when playing on the offense is something the rockets have lacked ever since i became a fan. I cannot think of one player we've had that plays the way he does and all that bs about him not playing D may be somewhat true but still must not matter as much considering they are in the western semis and we are a lottery team. If we can pull the trigger on an amare trade i'd be willing to give up anyone besides Yao (and definitely not because of his play but for the obvious reasons), chase (for his intangibles and incredible upside), and perhaps even scola (because the guy just simply goes for it every posession of the game with incredible passion).

I would also like to go ahead and say thanks to all the fans on here because even though i may not post stuff on here, i read almost every thread and close to every post every night even as a medical student.

This. However, I will support him because his mother probably needs the money. I bet its hard to be a prostitute in today's economy in addition to supporting your drug habit.

Glad you enjoy the forum. There is no better place on the internet to discuss NBA basketball than the Dish on cf.net!

Your reason's for rooting for Amare are exactly the same as my reasons for rooting for Carmelo.

I root for the Suns, but that is only because I want Nash to get at least one before he retires.
