Can't find the gardening thread we had earlier this year, but a quick question.

If any of you grow squash, we've had a problem with some of the fruit starting to rot away and some of the stems/vines of the plant turning a dark green. The squash on these plants are turning a dark orange (those that don't rot) compared to the other squash. The leaves are also starting to brown/gray a little. It isn't effectin all the plants, but it's getting worse and I don't know what to do about it.

Searching online brings up all sorts of stuff, from insects to blossom rot (though we are getting fruit) to beetles to fungus. I'm hoping to get a little info from our experienced BBSers. :)

I haven't experienced that exact problem with squash, but I'd guess blossom rot or some other fungus instead of insects. If it was a beetle or other pest problem, you'd probably have devastation across all of your fruit instead of on just some of them.

I've had cucumber plants get that kind of symptom (just the leaves not the cucumbers). The options we had were to spray the leaves with a light chlorine solution or to prune the affected areas. I wasn't comfortable spraying even a light amount of chlorine on food we were going to be eating so we pruned the areas and it seemed to contain the damage.

A dark green indicates to much nitrogen. Did you fertilize and if so what did you use?

No, only whatever was in the soil we used. Nothing else.

What soil did you use? Like from your yard or a bag?

Casey: it was just some standard garden mix from a local place.

Scribo, Will; I will look into those suggestions, thanks.
