I think I know why Morey wants to move up in the draft.

Because he has every intention of re-signing Yao. Think about it. The Rockets must know that Yao will probably have future injuries, but they still want him back. This means Morey has to not only build a championship roster, but he has to build a championship roster with the expectation that one of his max players is going to be in and out of street clothes. How to compensate for that? By stuffing the roster with as many rookie contracts as possible.

You see, what seemed odd to me was the rumor about Morey only offering Yao a four year extension. Why four years? Then it hit me, Yao's next contract would be expiring right as Cousins would be getting ready to sign his first max or near max.

It all fits together so nicely. Draft a legit big man and balance their small contract verses Yao's dead weight contract. Whether it's Cousins, Aldrich, or someone else, they will be drafted with the expectation of eventually replacing Yao Ming, and that could happen sooner rather than later depending on if he can stay healthy.

Yes, that's right and he also said he would like to replace Landry through the draft.

Yao is not even going to come close to getting a max contract, you can't build a championship team around rookies.

We just had to sit through Mcgrady/Yao both getting paid near Max, while hardly playing up to their contracts.

Why would you want to do that again ?

    Morey is not this dumb.

I hate to say it because I think everybody knows he's not gonna let Yao walk, just from the financial stand point he's far more valuable than his contract...But I agree, I think Cousins can be a star in this leauge

I'm sorry to bust peoples bubbles but Cousins won't get past the Nets at #3.

they could easily move Lopez to a PF position like Tim Duncan and put Cousins at 5.

Which explains why there's a rumor saying Morey wants to trade for that pick.

once again, do you guys know how fat 16 % body fat is?

    cousins=fail

sheesh, okay try this, look at his body in senior year high school , then he balloons the next year freshman at college, now he has gained MORE weight since 4 months ago. dude is pig miller . Even when he was slimmer his senior year of High School he wasnt ripped, he was a "soft" looking 270. That shows me he is just big from eating not from pumping weights.

now look at his athleticism senior in high school, jumping out of the sky like david robinson...now look at his athleticism 1 year later at kentucky, looks like a completely different player. How does an athlete even get fat? I eat all the donuts in the world and cant get fat without even working out let alone basketball combines. This shows me 2 things, 1.bad genetics to get fat, 2.lazy work ethic to gain weight before a combine

now watch greg monroe. thats a man right there.

Moot point. Rockets would have to give up a ton of assets to move up to 2-3 to draft cousins and it aint happening. Losing Budinger/Hill or all the knick picks isnt worth it.

I think the rumor is geared toward Minnesota's pick. Morey has shown lots of interest in Minny assets.

    Raven,

I think the Rockets are still in a fairly good position for the funeral, even without Yao Ming as you say. Really, the Rockets are only one above average big man away from being a solid playoff team. Even without Yao, the team battle for the last 2 weeks of the season were as high as #2, during December.

I think Cousins, Aldrich, Monroe, and Whiteside can fill that void left by Mutombo (in their first season) and eventually take over for Yao as a starter, once he is done, which is most likely going to be 3-6 years.

Next year, about half of team's regular starters are going to be 26 and under.

I have to continue to say that I love what Morey is doing with this team, even without Yao Ming, we could go into next year with one of the deepest teams in the NBA.

    C - Draft Pick and/or FA/ with Yao Ming
PF - Scola/Jeffries/Hayes/Hill (three of those players could play center in certain occasion)
    SF - Ariza/Battier/Budinger
    SG - Martin/Budinger
    PG - Brooks/Lowry

That's a killer 2nd unit with a deep rotation that could involve a variety of sets.

If not Cousins, perhaps Aldrich. I think Morey wants a quality backup for Yao without paying to much. That means a rookie big. A rookie big, who wouldn't be getting his first big payday (after fours years) until Yao's contract was coming to an end. How convenient.

And he probably won't slide past #2 before its all said and done. Bigs always move up the closer we get to the draft and Cousins going #2 wouldn't surprise me. Especially if the Sixers see an opportunity to pick up an extra asset in all this and still draft Turner at #3.

Please stay away from Big Country v2.0. If anything I'd kill to get Greg Monroe. I see your point about keeping a young big to take the torch from Yao.

The thing about Cousins is that I think his success as an NBA player will most likely be based on where he lands. For the most part, if he can land in a good situation or a place with strong leadership, like the Spurs; Trailblazers; or Rockets, he could turn into a pretty decent NBA player, maybe a borderline all-star. If he goes to a team, like the Clippers or T-Wolves, he can be the player that might get some nice numbers for a season or so, like Eddy Curry and be useless for the rest of his NBA career.

With a really good team, he'd more forced to an impact, right away or in the next few seasons. Young players linger on bad teams for some reason and their improvement is a little more sporadic.

    +1

Morey will use this rumor as a smoke screen and end up drafting some street baller out of Uganda that turns out to be the next coming of Tim Duncan.

morey is just doing due diligence by exploring every option. weather its moving up to the 3rd, 4th, or 6th pick... moving down in the draft... or moving out of it completely.

i doubt he is focussed on finding a center to replace yao. i think morey has to go into the draft with the mentality that you make the best move you can make right now and worry about the rest later. maybe we end up with a wing player or a pg... but if it's the best move you can make (remember when brooks was drafted and we had 3 pg's already) then you have to make it.

all he is doing is trying to figure out all of his options for a night with infinite variables. he will prioritize those options and go with the best one available.

He won't be a financial stand point, if he can't play consistently. I don't know if Cousins can be a star in this league or not,but there are red flags about him.

Really? Because that's the most glaring hole on our roster unless you think Chuck Hayes is the answer. We don't have a big we can depend on at this point nor have we had a decent backup since Deke left and even he was an offensive liability.
