[CHRONIC] Did the Rockets chances to land Chris Bosh end before they could begin?

Well, that did not take long.

The Rockets chances to land Chris Bosh — always a bit of a long shot given the deep field of competitors — seemed to take a hit, maybe a crushing blow, when an ESPN.com report on Friday quoted two unnamed sources citing a five-team wish list Bosh reportedly gave the Raptors. According to the report, he listed the Raptors, Heat, Knicks, Lakers and Bulls.

In other words, besides the token inclusion of Toronto, he would consider teams with a superstar or a chance to get one, an apparent plan to join forces with one of his Olympic teammates, Kobe Bryant, LeBron James or Dwyane Wade.

That would rule out the Rockets, the one team expected to make Bosh its No. 1 goal.

Daryl Morey, however, might not need to be talked down from a Sears Tower ledge.

Soon after the ESPN.com report, Chris Broussard went on ESPN to say there are several additional teams that interest Bosh. I heard Friday afternoon that there are "a handful" of teams on the initial wish list, but that the five teams listed in the ESPN.com story were not quite right.

The South Florida Sun Sentinel later quoted Bosh's agent Henry Thomas (also Wade's agent) saying he has not given any list of any kind to Colangelo.

My guess is that the Rockets had not made him their hearts' desire without some hint along the way from someone that Bosh would at least hear and consider their pitch.

I have not heard that. Bosh has not shown his hand any more than the other top free agents. (For a guy who tweets what he has for breakfast, it would be nice if Bosh weighed in on this.) But if we hear rumors, surely teams do, too. And if Bosh had given the Raptors a list, Morey could get that from Raptors GM Bryan Colangelo. He would not have to hear a rumor. And he could adjust his shopping list accordingly.

Besides, it is May. Free agency starts in July. A lot changes in that much time. It always does. Two weeks before the Rockets trade for Ron Artest, it was dead. Things change.

The Rockets, however, would seem a long shot. Kevin Martin is a good player and a great fit. He is not James, Bryant or Wade. No one knows what Yao Ming will be or when. And the Rockets are at the moment a lottery team.

It does not help that they have been their very worst when they play in Toronto. Trevor Ariza chose the Rockets over Portland and Cleveland because he was so impressed with them. Bosh has seen the Rockets stink. A lot of this is — especially in May — is about perception. It is difficult to think Bosh's impression of the Rockets is that they need only to add him to contend for a championship.

He is an outstanding player and a perfect fit with the Rockets' roster. But players, like fans and media, tend to add up the parts as if assembling a fantasy team and in these situations they are not necessarily wrong to do that.

The Rockets are not going to turn many heads away from the Lakers, or teaming up with Wade or James.

Still, it's May. The Rockets' chances are not great, but they don't feel over already.

Congratulations to Yao Ming and his wife Ye Li.

Ye Li gave birth to a seven-pound, nine-ounce baby girl on Friday. The baby and Ye Li are both in good health. The family did not release the name of the baby.

    From Yao:

"I am very excited about the arrival of our daughter. This is a very special moment in our lives and we thank everyone for their kindness and support."

Daryl Morey and the Rockets were fined for comments Morey made on an ESPN podcast in February. Morey discussed the sort of system he would prefer for player contracts. Between the two fines, the NBA hit the Rockets and the GM for $100,000. Does this seem that egregious?

"Personally — and I'll just speak for me personally, this is obviously not the position of the NBA — I like guaranteed contracts," Morey said. "The team and the player come to an agreement. I think that's fair."

Morey also said he would prefer to have a hard salary cap, but with no rules about player contracts.

"I'd have no rules," Morey said. "I would have a hard cap, because I think that's fair and get to a fair revenue split with the players, then I think no rules under that. Each team should be able to do what they think is best underneath that.

"We want the rules to favor the prepared, meaning no rules, except the hard cap. That would favor the teams better at planning, better at forecasting."

He was discussing topics that will come up in collective bargaining, but he did not seem to be stepping too far over the line by talking about his preference, especially since he said it in the context of what he thought would help his team. No one really thinks the NBA or players' association is going to negotiate based on what Morey thinks is best for the Rockets.

With that in mind, the fines seem a little harsh, and more about establishing the precedent than punishing the infraction.

This is good news for the Rockets although some fans might not see it as such right now.
Couple of reasons why this is good.

    1) With Yao Ming, locking up the Center position, we need an enforcer or a tough minded player to star with him at the power forward position. Bosh is actually softer than Yao.

    2) What kind of man bases his future on the decision of another man. aka. I will go wherever Lebron is going. Sounds like another diva.

    3) Considering the amount of money that Bosh will be demanding, Rockets just missed a bullet here.

    4) Rather than wasting all that money on Bosh, we can either develop our newly acquired big man aka Jordan Hill or spend it wisely somewhere else.

I know Bosh is a local kid but like Shaq said "He is the RuPaul of big men

I'm not worried about the Bosh situation. First of all, it does seem to baseless when it first came out. Besides, this rockets team has lots of chips. We have the bargaining power to play in a lot of hands. If sign and trade does not work with one player, we can target another one. If sign and trade does not workout, we can simply work out a trade to get a good player on a bad team who wants out on a bad team.

With the Morey situation....its almost like the NBA is working under communist China rules........

At this point, instead of reaching or giving up too much, I'd rather the Rockets wait until the next CBA before signing a max free agent. I'm content to see the Rockets draft the best player available and for them to find a decent backup for Yao. That would be enough for me.

When's the next player worthy of max money on the market? In the past decade, we'd only have Gasol, Nash, and T-Mac as prime max-level players who switched teams.

It's not as if just having a bit of money freed up from Yao's contract will matter much. You basically need combo of: max player + pissed at his own team + willing to come to the Rockets over other teams. The likelihood of that is simply very, very small.

If anything, you get better odds just tanking the year before a great crop of prospects.

    [dreamcasting]

in a decade or so, after guiding the Rockets to multiple championships, a new improved commissioner comes to town.

    [/dreamcasting]

i like the idea of a hard cap ... it levels the playing field against spendthrift billionaires intent on buying championships. the fine imo is counter productive if censorship is Stern's objective. i'm only aware of of these Morey opines because of the fine!

probably more likely that Stern just wants to throw a scare in the next Gm thinking of going maverick.

I won't breathe a sigh of relief until he actually signs with another team but I'm pretty glad he doesn't want to come here. I don't see how he addresses any of the Rockets' needs except for length in the front court. He isn't a protector of the paint, he isn't a closer and he isn't a leader. He would be a total waste of a max contract.

I think this team has enough talent where a solid draft pick and some creative dealing by Morey could put us right back in the 50+ wins category. If Yao somehow comes back and is healthy then the sky is the limit.

Bosh is not a winner and even he himself knows that, just look at his track record and all statements and actions.......... we should not waste our assets on another T-MAC.
IMHO finding the next superstar through this draft and using some of our assets to get him is the way to go.
I also would not give up Lowry, Scola, Ariza, Bud, Hill, Martin, and the 14th.

Agree, I like Scola and Hill and the PF. Add some shotblocking size and a few extras with a semi healthy Yao. Then wait for the next trade deadline.

How has Amare Stoudamire gotten lost in the mix here? Doesn't anybody recall the rockets had a deal in place at the deadline. Bosh seems like a smokescreen.

I think Bosh himself would agree with you, and that is why Hounston is not on his list.

I definitely have to agree with you here. I think Bosh is a really good player and an all-star but a high risk player if he declines physically or we have to give up too much to get him.

With our draft pick, development of Hill, and MLE we should be able to be a definite playoff caliber team with a better ability of trading for an all-star free agent at the trade deadline or in 2011 and not give up as much.

Bosh teaming up with Lebron or Wade would be a terrible business decision in my eyes where his value would drop considerably. Plus there is no guarentee that they would win a championship that easily.

i dont know but i have a strong gut feeling we end up with amare. just to many signs.

1.the main teams, miami, bulls, nets seem to have bosh, wade, lebron, joe johnson as their choices

2.that leaves amare out, but he doesnt want to stay in phoenix

3.rockets ,morey are in "win now" mode,. i know alot of you are going to say morey wont panic, but seriously, yaos window is maybe 1-2 years max, the rockets have to do SOMETHING, we cant just stand pat.

    4. maybe moreys plan is to get 19 yr old cousins, while that may help when yao is retired, that wont help THIS YEAR

    5. we have the ASSETS that Kerr REALLY likes. cbud, hill, brooks, picks, scola, battier, Kerr seems to be the 1 gm that likes our assets and doesnt "underrate" them like toronto might.

    6. i have about 1-2 dreams a year about rockets ,2 months ago i had one of lebron at the slam dunk contest and i was there hearing rumors he was going to rockets(next years trade deadline?) and last night i had one with amare wearing a suit and tie sitting on front row at toyota center (press conference?)

of course, i had a dream 3 years ago we got wade, and i guess that wont happen (come on morey do it!)

I think reality sets in, and this team needs to add a "star", while not bosh or lebron, amare is probably a better choice than Favors(4th pick)?

    Why Bosh?

    Scola > Bosh
