Apparently a teacher gave out an assignment to write a letter to a person who has changed their life. The student in question chose to write to Jesus. The teacher told him that he could not because "Jesus did not exist," and that Jesus "was not a real person." I have no prblem with the choice being rejected, but the manner in which the teacher allegedly did so was completely out of line.

This I don't understand...how is it establishment of religion?? or how is church/state separation violated?? by simply allowing a child to write to Jesus in a class??? Why is that so bad???

But she absolutely crossed the line when she flatly denied the existence of Jesus.

Nutcracker,
Isa is Jesus. I think Jesus is latin for Messiah. Well Muslims call Jesus Isa. Also I don't think ones name will translate into different languages

If memory serves, the assignment was to write a letter to someone who might write back.

It's just a case of someone with an axe to grind, like that Newdow fellow.

No matter where you stand on the issue of religion, that was a really insulting and degrading thing for the teacher to say. Even though the student wasn't following directions, all the teacher had to do was give him an F. Then, if the student and his mom complain, she can simply say "Hey, he wasn't following directions." Instead, her lack of tact has embroiled everyone in a costly and stupid lawsuit. I hope the district fires her for being a dumbass.

I cannot wait for a Moslem to do this. . have his kid write Muhammed [the Prophet]. . . then sue when it is not allowed. . . how many people would scream then? I bet no where NEAR as many.

What was the actual assignment? If the person was someone who could write back, then I understand rejecting the choice; but you can't slam on Jesus like that, the man did exist, albeit in whatever capacity depends on one's beliefs. You'd have to explain to the child in a much better way than that.

Such an assignment is asking for trouble. "I'm gonna write to Santa, he changed my life with such and so gift from last year!"

Whenever I see something quoted from Fox"News" I am always suspicious that something was taken out of context. Not that Fox leans to the right....way, way waaaaaaaaaaay to the right...

I disagree....with all the pressure to be sensitive to Muslims in our society today, I bet there would be lots of screaming...from both sides of the aisle. There is no reason a child shouldn't be able to talk about his religion in school...telling a child he can't mention the name of the prophet/deity/messiah/whatever associated with the religious practices of his family is absurd to me. I'd be pissed if they did that to a child of any faith...

I feel the same way about CNN. Are you familiar with Tailwind?

The teacher in question should be fired for simple stupidity. There is plenty of debate about Jesus' divinity, as there should be. The odds seem pretty slim that he was the actual son of God.

But there's no question Jesus existed.

are you actually laying odds on this??? are the odds slim that there is a god, period??? are the odds slim that Moses received the Ten Commandments from God??? are the odds slim that Mohammed was a prophet??? are the odds slim that there aren't hundreds of gods as Hindu teaches??

where would one find the odds for the claims of the major world religions?? is there a room at Caesar's I can get some of that action?? I'd put down just about everything I have that Jesus was the son of God.

There are over 1000 prophetic references about the Son of God in the old testament, Jesus fulfilled every one of them. I'd say the odds are really good.

if God had a good chance to be the father of Jesus, that means Anna Kournikova and I have a great chance to be together for all eternity.
