I am just curious, which city would you consider to be the prominent city in Texas?

By prominent, I mean based on notoriety in other parts of America and the world, but I also mean based on the opportunities present. I'm talking in terms of entertainment options, tourism options, corporations with divisions there etc.

I can look at population figures, and usually that would work, but while Houston is the most populous city in Texas, Dallas-Ft. Worth-Arlington is the largest metropolitan area in Texas. So it's hard to judge.

It's hard to describe what I am trying to ask.

When people think of a California city, they think of LA first.

When people think of a Florida city, they think of Miami first.

When people think of a Texas city, which city do they think of first? Dallas or Houston?

When people think Texas they usually assume Dallas I have seen from my travels, interacting with strangers and living overseas.

what about San Francisco or Orlando for your examples?

i mean, it's all subjective. and you're asking folks on a message board for the fans of the Houston Rockets.

I think world wide more people think of Houston, actually a lot more people know about Houston more than Texas.

I think the term "Houston we have a problem" also made Houston more well known.

As Mr Brightside said, Dallas historically within the US. But in the increasingly globalized world we live in, people abroad seem to know Houston more (as an energy/health care industry hub).

it depends on who, or more importantly where, you are asking. within the US, dallas is clearly the more notorious city. we may have the "houston, we have a problem," dallas has an assassination.

worldwide, i think houston is better known.

Dallas. I think the Cowboys are a large part of the reason.

In America, I would say Dallas

but abroad, I would say Houston. I have traveled all over the world and when I say I am from Texas, their follow up question is always "Houston?"
