I expected a little too much from this short film. I found it to be pretty lame, the Ricky Williams "Run Ricky Run" film was great tho. Maybe it was cause Cube directed it.
yes that was great! I did enjoy Straight Outta LA cause it's brought back all the old school memories. What happened to Starter? that company was raking it in back in the day.
This series is wonderful. I think this "episode" was weak due to Ice Cube's inexperience and too-personal involvement with the "scene." That said, I thoroughly enjoyed it. I remember this era with great fondness. I loved football, I loved the Raiders and I loved NWA and the South Central rap groups. At the time, I thought the move was ridiculous. My image of the Raiders was Oakland and Madden and stick-um. When they moved, Hollywood added something to their mystique. Once NWA and the boyz started rockin' the gear, it was settled. Then...they moved back? Twisted. Cool. Now, I can't stand the f**king Traiders.
As soon as Soren Baker said, "to me it was the Beatles of rap" talking about N.W.A. I lol'd and stopped watching.
I loved it. It was less about the Raiders team and more about the culture of hip-hop and how it blew up the Raider Nation.
Thanks for posting this stuff. I think this is a pretty weak one in the series, though. I don't need to see Al Davis again. I saw him plenty when he played the Crypt Keeper. A better focus on a Raiders documentary is on their current fans. It could be a modern expose on the failure of America's educational and prison systems. I really enjoyed watching all of these grown men in Halloween costumes making the walk of shame back to the parking lot after the Texans beat their ass last year.
You gotta compare this one directly to "The U," since the story lines (community, era, football) were quite similar. "The U" absolutely raped this documentary. Still think "The U" was the best, followed by the Colts band. Still gotta watch the rest of 16th Man.
