I just found this long article from scout.com. I would post it here but it is just too long. It's a good read nonetheless. Here is the link: http://northwestern.scout.com/2/971100.html
Groovy! Thanks for the heads-up. I thought this was a nice quote from the article: Morey has done just that. Remember how Brooks was the No. 19 scorer in the league? Well, the average 2009-10 salary of the other 19 players in the top 20 was about $11.9 million. Brooks’ salary? A hair over $1.1 million. Heck, Alston made more money when the Nets bought out his contract than Brooks made the entire season. Then there’s fellow Morey acquisition Luis Scola, who has started every game for Houston the past two seasons. Last season, Scola was one of only 11 players in the NBA to average at least 16.2 points and 8.6 rebounds. The other 10 made an average of $13.2 million; Scola made $3.2 million. Morey also freed up nearly $6 million in the summer of 2009 when he applied for – and was granted – an “injury exception” for Yao Ming. The obscure NBA rule grants teams extra money should it be deemed likely that a player, in this case Yao, will miss an upcoming season. Morey’s implementation of the injury exemption allowed the Rockets to spend more money to sign free-agent forward Trevor Ariza. Morey turned Yao’s broken foot into $6 million and a starting forward. http://northwestern.scout.com/2/971100.html The writer raves about Scola, so I enjoyed the read, of course.
No mention of Battier in there. Whether you're a Morey supporter or detractor, the Battier acquisition has to be considered a significant moment in Morey's career with the Rockets.
Great article. A lot of it is known here on clutchfans, but the interview with his old Northwestern prof and the detail on Les's GM search stand out.
Morey is the anti Isiah Thomas. I bet if they were both in the same room, the universe would collapse.
I think you'll right. Morey didn't do any trades with the Knicks in the Isiah era, almost as if there was a force repeling him from isiah
By the time Morey took over as GM, there was absolutely nothing left for him to take from Isiah. That franchise was already well run into the ground.
Great read. So what happens when Morey is ready to buy a team, does Les sell? I wouldn't mind Morey owning the Rockets
Just guessing, but I don't think Morey is making enough money to buy the team outright any time remotely soon. He could possibly go in on the purchase with others, but it takes hundreds of millions to buy a successful franchise, and Morey doesn't exactly have the time right now to pursue outside business ventures that would allow him to earn that much. I think what was stated in the article is that he thought that owning a team was the only way he'd ever be in sports, so he was going to try to make money to do that. That was before he ended up in a GM position.
These are some specious comparisons. Of course a player is going to make less than the average of all players who are better than him. It would be a lot more telling to compare Brooks to the average salary of the 15-25 scorers. Brooks and Scola are good values but they are NOT $12-13 million players
Have you ever seen a skinny bully? He's been so busy beating up other GM's and stealing their lunch money that he's had no time for exercise.
Yeah I wasn't implying that DM has enough money to buy a team right now, but it wouldn't surprise me in the least if someone with the resources approaches him at some point. I think he'll own a team, it's just a question of when IMO. Not really worried about, I'm just saying.
It really was a fantastic read. It reminded me on how lucky we are to have him as our GM. So thanks for posting it!!
