If you are awake 24+ hours it is hard to drive. It might be just as bad as being drunk since you slip in and out of sleep.

I remember a news report some years ago of them testing out people who were drunk and sleep deprived in a simulation driving game. The sleep deprived one was much worse off between the two.

Even though this is a tragedy for both parties involved, the woman who was killed is the REAL victim here. Driving while tired is just as irresponsible as talking on the phone/texting or drinking while driving (in my opinion).

It is just a shame that the innocent woman is a secondhand topic when reading/listening about this accident.

At my after prom thing you had to be picked up by someone else.

I am surprised that the school didn't have that policy in place.

Methinks that after this trafedy, they will.

Please remember that people who knew and loved Tobi may be reading this thread as you make your comments.

Hindsight is 20/20 and his parents and friends are second guessing every decision made that night.

The lady that died was a nurse on her way to work. One reason more hasn't been published about her, was her name wasn't released. But, yes the boy that died has bigger news appeal. I promise you that this does not make it any easier for his family.

I hate to see people coming on and throwing accusations and trying to find blame in these types of situations. Bad things happen to good people. There was every intent to provide a safe place for the kids to have fun after their prom. I wonder how many lives have been saved over the years, by these types of non alcohol After Proms?

Is it really on the kid though? They held this event without providing some kind of transportation or the opportunity to sleep-in right? What exactly is supposed to happen? The school should be responsible for protecting the students. No its not technically the schools fault either, I do not think they should be sued (although I could see them or D&B being sued) but like I said... he was supposed to just sleep in a parking lot?

D&B won't be sued nor do the parents have a cause for D&B to be sued. They just hosted the event. It was a non-alcoholic event.

Be careful. You're using logic and some don't take kindly to that 'round these parts.

I think at my school's after prom, there were buses that took us home to the school where we had to have been picked up by a parent. It looks like this school didn't have the same type of precautions.

No they didn't. There are over 700 seniors at the school, and when you add in dates the prom is pretty large.

Tobi would have turned 18 on Friday.

I'll admit that when I was in college I had done an all nighter studying. I can't remember what I had to do but i had to get on the freeway and I fell asleep for 2-3 seconds. Nothing happened thankfully! Never did that again.

Good post. It's really sad to see people in here calling a deceased 18 year old kid scum.

Its not about alcohol, its about sleep. If D&B didn't offer sleeping accommodations or even the fact that they didn't let kids stay past "closing" so they could get some sleep then they can get sued. They shouldn't. Seems like they could though.

I wonder if the d-bag who called the kid scum feels like an idiot, now that it's out that he fell asleep at the wheel.

I've fallen asleep at the wheel twice, both while coming home from College Station; one time I went off the road and hit a sign in my dad's truck. Dented up the front end from that sign. It's real scary stuff and now that I have a child on the way, I have to put my game face on every time I drive. I have to be caretaker of my family who will be riding with me. This situation with Tobi has really opened my eyes wider than they were before. It shows that terrible things can happen to great families, and I'm including the nurse who was killed as well. In a split second, your life can be changed for the worse and then that creates a ripple affect with your friends and family. :(

Are people actually "praying" or just posting that they're praying? I never got the reasoning behind posting it.
So... does that make it OK, though? I am not defending the person you're calling a d-bag, but... man, is it OK with you that someone, as alleged in the investigation, causes someone else to die because they were either drunk or fell asleep at the wheel?

Still a sad situation for all victims, man, but I do not feel bad at all for someone doing either. :( That's just me.

The school was responsible for the kids, not D & B. The school should of took them back to school instead of making them drive to D & B. A restaurant is not responsible for letting people sleep at their place of business. No restaurant does that.

This was a high school event for all seniors. Bellaire High rented out D & B for the night.

Link? Last I heard, the investigation was ongoing, and alcohol was still a possible factor:

    http://www.khou.com/news/Police-driver-kills-woman-in-early-morning-car-crash-93893039.html

Last line: "The cause of the crash remains under investigation."

Perhaps "scum" is a harsh term. But if this person, who's basically already an adult (would have been 18 this week), took his own life and the lives of those on the road into his hands by knowingly driving in a diminished capacity, I have trouble defending his actions. He killed another person who did nothing wrong. You must admit: that's a pretty awful thing to do.

Seriously, everyone is flipping out about a hypothetical insult. No one ever said "hey, this guy is definitely scum." The idea is that if he was drinking and that caused the accident, then he doesn't deserve to be looked on in any sort of sympathetic light. If it were a family member or friend of mine killed, I'd be the first to call this guy trash if he were driving drunk, and I doubt anyone here would feel differently if it were someone close to them.

And, of course, if the kid was just tired after a long night of fun, then yes, this is a horrible occurrence for everyone involved.

Point is, no one knows for sure yet. I'll reserve my opinion until the facts come to light.

Exactly. Which means you give condolences to his family and that other lady's family and then you keep quiet. You don't go spouting off hypotheticals. At the least you give him the benefit of the doubt and assume he fell asleep at the wheel.
If it comes out later that he was drinking then you can slam him all you want.

Drunk or sober, either way, this kid was still the one at fault. The only truly innocents are the lady and the person in the first car. Tragic, but I still feel more sorry for the innocent victims of this accident.
