You have to buy one? I thought you got those for free.

If my daughter earned a jacket, I would buy it, and wouldn't worry about re-zoning or anything that would take its meaning away. On the contrary, it brings its value up.

I had one in Soccer from 11th grade and just a "letter" from Tennis (Doubles Champions). I guess ours were free because we only got some if we did extremely well, like with a championship.

Ha. Shows what I know... I never lettered (you had to make the regional meet or be on the team for 4 years and I quit after two to letter - ripoff becuase I made the team as a freshman). But I still say get it - just in case.

That is a good point, I need to tell my daughter to ask if she will get the jacket for free.

I got the order form in front of me and it's very unclear. It's from the people who puts patches on so I am not sure if they also provide the jacket.

It starts with saying: IF the school awards the jacket, we are responsible for the patches, if the school does not, then we are responsible for all.

I wouldn't spend the $$$, but I'm a cheap bastrard...Especially if she's going to another school...If you ask her, of course she's going to say yes, and it'll be a momento, which isn't a bad thing, but tell her you'll be her an outfit instead...

Some school pays for the jacket but not the patches. The patches are what's really expensive..... if school pays for the Jacket, just let her have the name up front (like ~20 bucks) for current and then get her fully decked out one when she earns it at the next school.

Its the end of the school year, right? If she's going to another school and is going to make the new team I wouldn't fork out the cash. She's not going to wear it at the new school. Seems like a waste and in the long run she'll wonder why she has two jackets. If the team won state, I would reconsider.

I think you should at least talk to her and ask her about it first....see what she thinks, i mean if shes so desperate, then get it for her, if she's like, well i can get one at the new school, then let it roll pass

Why does she want the jacket for a school she's only going to be in for another couple of weeks? Will the jacket even be ready by the end of the school year? Seems weird that she would want one.

    BUT...

If she feels like she earned it and just wants it to remember her accomplishment(s), just get it for her. We're talking about $200 for a letterjacket, not an iPhone. It's something meaningful to her. She's earned it.

I had a letterjacket in HS but I never wore it because it was a band letterjacket. We drummers thought we were much too cool to wear the band ones, so we ordered our own DRUMLINE windbreakers instead and put all our patches on those. :)

Does she plan on having a college education? If so what's the point of wasting money on a high school jacket? College will be a much more meaningful experience in her life and she would not care about a jacket after graduating. If she is jus graduating HS, I would buy her a jacket.

What school was that? We did the same thing at our school.

Oh, and OP, I thought my letter jacket was a waste of money, but then again I'm a cheap Asian and I hid my letter jacket order form from my parents so they WOULDN'T buy it.

I also lettered as a freshman, and everyone at my high school wore their letter jackets all the time, so it was pretty cool for me to be able to wear it. Your daughter's situation is a different though since she's moving schools......maybe get the patch and the blackberry for her now, and then the jacket next year. I guess it really just depends on what she wants to do, since she's the one that's gonna be wearing the jacket of another school next year.

Haha, what the heck? I guess that means she shouldn't go on a first date, or socialize with friends for that matter, since she's gonna be getting married one day in her life, and all of that stuff will be meaningless compared to the guy she marries. Your rationale makes no sense.

I lettered as a Freshman (DRUMLINE) and wore the hell out of my letter jacket for four years. It's still in my closet somewhere. Loved it.

    Two things:

    1) I wouldn't wear another school's jacket if I moved schools. Your loyalty lies with the school and teammates you're playing with.

    2) If you're going to be at the new school next fall - you know, when you'll actually have to wear the jacket - why buy a jacket now. She probably won't even get it until next school year, right? Soccer is a spring semester sport in Texas, so it wouldn't make sense to get the jacket now.

I'd get the letter, and she can put it up in her room/bulletin board/scrapbook. The letter is the recognition, the jacket is something useful to display it on.

As an alternative, can she get a "letter blanket?" If she insists on ordering something beyond the letter, that would probably be a little cheaper option.

Ok, I just got an email from a Senior's parent that clears some of it up.

The school does award the jacket and the letter for free.

We are paying for everything else we want to add to it.
Darn, it costs a lot for just the logos ...
$48.5 for 4" name on the back.
$24.5 for 1" name on the front
Year, mascot patch, jersey number ... $ 32.5 each

That's how it adds up to close to $200 for a package.
