when i was watching the game on friday, i noticed that he has sort of a tim duncan like game. very nice touch, uses the backboard lots, has a nice hook shot, and has pretty decent range for a big man (saw that during the shootaround). maybe a little bit of a mix between LaFrentz and Duncan but with more potential than Raef. What do you think?
I see where you are coming from comparing him to Duncan offensively, and it makes sense. Aside from what you said, yao has a baseline turnaround jumper, some nifty post up moves and ability to drive and slash. I think Yao is quite close to Duncan skillwise at the same stage.
Many people think Yao would be a Rik Smits player, at worst. And that really isn't a complaint either. From what I saw, Smits had a high FG% and helped keep his team in games. I also hear some comparisons to Sabonis. Though I've also heard comparisons to Shawn Bradley. I wonder why they compare the 2? I think Yao will probably be very similair to Smits because of his shooting ability and highfg%. I don't think he put up his numbers, probably a lot more, but he may be similiar.
You're seriously comparing him to Duncan! Ming is nowhere near Duncan as of now, Duncan can do everything better than Ming except maybe hit an open shot. Ming is probably a weaker Rik Smits with a better touch, even Rik Smits wouldn't let a 6-6 forward push him around. Its high hopes like this thats gonna ruin Ming. Just give him like 2-3 years and he probably will help the Rox to the finals.
good point. people compare him to player that are at equal height or close, but hi style of play is quit similar to tim duncan
Rudy said that Yao reminds him more of a young Bill Walton, who could score inside and outside. Think about it and it's exactly what Duncan was. Style and skillwise Yao's more like Duncan and Walton type of player. Yao is different from Rik Smits, he is stronger and more physical with better handles and passing.
The Shawn Bradley comparison is only made by complete fools. The only similarity is their height. Yao is better than Bradley already...I saw an interview with Rowan Barrett of the Canadian team the other day and he said as much. From the highlights of Yao I saw on Sports Sunday tonight, he does appear to have some Duncan-ish moves. os
you must be a r****d.................. it's a 6'6 260 "barkley" we are talking about here... HELLO??? anyone at home????? remember when Barkely was still in houston? dream couldn't hold his ground against a MUCH stronger shaq... so they gave the job to barkley...
i'm not sayin he's as good as duncan right now...i'm saying he is comparable in style. i do believe he could turn into a duncan if he continues to develop the moves he's got. have you seen him play? if not, then don't put my comparison down...when i saw him, his moves DID remind me alot about duncan.
yeah, no kidding. everybody's sayin how he couldn't dominate a 6'6 guy...man, this guy is huge. he's as strong as any center would be.
How about Illgauskas without injuries? That sounds like a good comparison. From what I remember, that vguy was on his way to becoming one of the better C's in the league. I think if he hadn't had injury problems, he would be second to Shaq right now. That's how bad the league is. What really baffles me is this: he seems to get blocks at a decent rate in international competition, as well as the CBA. but Jerry West said that he's NOT a shotblocker. Does anyone have any idea what's up with that? I'm worried that he's a step too slow to block shots, and it will cost him a lot of fouls.
That's a unique comparison. Not many people know about Illgauskas. He was a force, with a nice touch. Sorta like Ming. But, the more I watch Ming, the more I want to compare him with Dirk Nowizski, but with better post skills. Both have that finesse game. Both shoot the ball with that "Larry Bird-like over the head shot." And both have a WIDE stance when they shoot the ball. The reason I don't like the Duncan comparison as much (aside from using the bankshot/glass). Ducan doesn't like to shoot no farther than 15ft from the basket. Ming has 23ft range. And, HE CAN HIT HIS FREE THROWS! Ha ha ha!
Comparisons are tough, but I'd have to go with a heavier Ralph Sampson. The skills, height and game are comparable. Thank goodness Yao has a much stronger frame.
