Could be a fan too. Sometimes when the fan gets old and worn, and the bearings get out of line, it really sounds awful.

The hard drive is maybe 2 years old (western digital). The fan is 2 years old as well.

Should I take it in or is this something I can fix on my own?

    thx

WD hard drives have had a lot of breakdown problems as of late. I would heed the advice already given to you...backup all your stuff now. Then take it in. It could be a fan...if so, then the fan goes out will cause your processor to fry. Either way...you're computer is a very sick kid.

One of my case fans was causing a ton of noise a few months ago. Most fans have a sticker in the middle of the fan, covering up a tiny hole. You can peel the sticker off and place a drop or two of lubricating oil into the hole and it should fix it. Remember to cover the hole back up with the sticker or tape to prevent dust from getting in. Speaking of dust, you might want to take this time to wipe off all the dust collecting on your fans and anywhere else inside your case.

Then again, your hard drive might be the problem!

It could be the fan on your video card. Check it out, if you have one. Good luck! :)

My thinking was actually the power supply fan -- that fan can make some HORRID noise.

It could be a fan inside the case, or the hard drive.

Do you have a CDROM in the CD Drive? Somtimes a CD in the CDROM drive can make the most awful sound if the disc is badly aligned in the drive or something.

    SAVE YOUR DATA NOW!!!

if it's the fan, then you have a backup of your data, if it's your HD and you don't save, you'll lose all that data!!!

good luck and let us know what you find!

I took off the case and found out that it was the COOLING FAN for my processor (Slot A - AMD Athlon 750). Luckily that is a pretty cheap fix.

Also I noticed that 2 green capsule (looked like a pill) looking things were laying at the bottom of the case.

I then noticed that the place these capsule things were located was a fuzzy brown looking cylinder that looked as if it was protecting something.

Is this something else that I need to be concerned about?
