I'm really displeased with all the "extra content" the industry is putting out for extra cash.

This article perfectly described the industry today: http://kotaku.com/5531665/

This is a GREAT idea....the used market has been killing the publishers and developers for years.

    Good going !!!!

Wait, so as long as I don't get the game used, I don't have to pay because the game will have an unused code?

You can still go online again after you buy it from a used vendor, you just have to buy a new online code for 10 dollars.

I dont see how this violates the first sale doctrine.

    Exactly !!!

If you want to play online, you must pay...those servers cost money, making the games cost money, paying hosting fees cost money.

Getting single player games will still work, but if you want multiplay, you must pay.

    GOOD MOVE !!

In that case, they should have an activation code that comes free (if you bought the game new) with the game to play any part of the game. There comes a point when a company is able to devalue the resell value of a product to nothing. At which point you are not owning the game, you are renting it.

It's a slippery slope that diminishes consumer's rights.

So on top of the $50 dollars I'm paying yearly for Xbox Live, I'm going to have to pay an additional $10 per every EA Sports game I own to play online? Well... Greedy bastards.

You just lost about 30% of your customer base. :)

2K is going to be competition free for a nice long period now.

No, if you buy the game new, you get the code for free, but once you have it, you can not transfer it.

And if someone buys the game used, and wants to play online they have to purchase a new code.

    Great move, IMO.

Wanna bet? They will follow suit ASAP.

Nothing like paying for XBox Live, and then Playonline Viewer on top of that to play FFXI. :(

If the servers cost money, then the original purchaser covered his copy's server fees with his initial purchase. EA has the potential $10.

When the original buyer sells his copy, the new owner has to pay another $10 fee to cover "extra bandwidth costs" for the new owner. EA has $20.

But wait, that makes no sense because the original owner can't play the game anymore. So in effect, EA has made an extra $10 at no loss to them.

I think this is stupid and is just another money grab by the big CEOs so they can continue to wipe their butts with Benjamins.

As game costs continue to rise, most AAA games are around $20 million to make, and then additional costs to manufacture, distribute and market.....they have to find a way to stem the loss of revenue from used product sales.

They are not stopping used games purchases, they are merely saying "If you want to play this online" you have to pay.

I don't see anything wrong with it, and applaud it....eventually games are going to be all download anyway.....this is step 1 to recapturing lost revenue.

More revenue = more games....more development, more fun.

    This is a good thing.

Heck 11 million people are still paying $15 a month to play WOW.....they have the same server requirements as other games like MW2, or Bad Company 2, or Fifa WC.......

And the ORIGINAL OWNER does not have to pay $10 for a code it comes FREE with the purchase, it is only the people buying the game USED that will have to pony up some cash....

    People are misreading this article.

I think its such a fantastic idea! Everyone should follow this well thought protocol.
Big UPs to EA -- even though I've been buying 2K games (2K's been going down the drain as of late. )

since the code can only be used once, does this mean you have to anti up again if you get a new computer?

or you can't play 'online ' from various machines (home/cottage/work).

or what's to stop reselling the code?

You could say the same thing about Netflix. You pay for Netflix, you get streaming. But if you don't have XBL, you don't get Netflix streaming on your 360.
