    Interesting.

We are planning to acquire Bosh, but if we keep Hayes, and resign Scola, we become ridiculously stacked at the PF position. If we are going for Bosh, someone is leaving the team. My guess is Jordan Hill or Scola.

The gist of it is, the Rockets can negotiate with these guys if they want to, BECAUSE, their deals are up after THIS year.

The article is basically saying the Rockets don't talk long term extensions, while a player still has years left on his contract.

For example, picking up Haye's option, and letting him be a FA after this year, as opposed to maybe talking extension.

Also, the article says Yao opting IN. He CAN opt out and hit the FA market this offseason. Same with Dirk. But, Yao would be leaving a lot of $ on the table, and who's going to throw big $ at him taking his injury history?

Usually players don't opt out and leave big $ on the table.

    See: Boozer last year

Good news, I suppose. I mean, depending upon how you look at it this essentially amounts to us agreeing that Chuck is worth $4.6M to us next year. I love Chuck as much as any of you, but I definitely wouldn't be heartbroken if that figure was used as part of a bigger deal. Nothing against the guy but business is business.

That's just it. Hayes might be in the Bosh formula.

    Moreyball, or Assetball.

Need assets to make a trade for an elite player.

Not saying Chuck would be traded, but letting him walk, stops the team from having another expiring contract to peddle.

you know, i was just going to make that post about ending contracts and you beat me to it. going into the off season, its better to have a player (or an ending contract) to trade than not.

You doubt the Rockets will trade for Bosh and you don't think he is a franchise player, but who do you think Morey will trade for?

I did not say I doubted anything, I questioned whether he is worth a max contract....

I would love to have Bosh on the team...

On the other hand, if you like the character of the team over the last few years, you need to keep at least one and probably two of Battier, Hayes, and Scola to maintain some leadership.

Article seemed to drop heavy enough hints that his option was picked up to be a trade asset. Win-win, either we keep him next year for nice value, or he's an attractive deal easily added in to a trade.

The Chuck Wagon rolls on. He's the perfect 8 or 9th man on a championship team. He neutralizes tough low post scorers, hardly ever gets hurt and plays through injuries, great passer and works within the offense and consummate teammate. That's worth 4 million and change for an NBA vet.

I'd trade him Bosh but not just for the contract. Chuck is worth more. Also, he can play backup center, so he's not redundant with Scola and Bosh.

" NBA law" knows exactly what he is talking about. i agree with every single thing you just said. Chucky gets taken for granted sometimes. I think he is well worth 4 mil.

Yep, it really doesn't make sense to pick up his option now unless he's being used for a mid-summer trade.

Except they are not picking it up now. The article says they plan on waiting until June 30, the last day for them to decide, before picking it up (in case Chuck gets maimed by Jazz fans in the mean time and cannot play any more).

my mistake, i misread the part about yao...but the "this season" part threw me off because even though Houston's season is over the next one hasn't started yet...silly mistake on his part, but it makes it confusing, not to mention suggesting the rockets will consider giving battier a long term deal is pretty unlikely, so that was a bad example.
