    Det's All, Folks
Blazers forward Detlef Schrempf retired Monday night after 15 years, three All-Star bids, two Sixth Man Awards and one trip to the NBA Finals."

THANK THE GOOD LORD ALMIGHTY!!!! Too bad it wasn't due to a seriously crippling injury. Well, there's always Rick Fox. I have faith.

I thought Shrimp had the tools to be a better player than he was.

I second that Rick Fox injury. Something so that he can't appear in any more movies after his pathetic NBA career is over with.

This would be great news if he had gone out when he was killing the Rockets in the Sonics' heyday. But for such a warrior to go out this way, after getting disrespected by Seattle and Portland, is just sad. I'll miss you Det, even though you killed the Rockets far too many times.

Thank you. Glad to hear that he does get some respect. He must be convinced that this year again, Portland is not going to win. I think he should have tried to get on a team like the Lakers or Miami and should have gone for one final title run. I also think he should not have gone out this way.

Any important game that he has played in in the last five years, aside from Rockets games, he has always played poorly in the clutch. I have never seen anyone miss as many lay ups as Detlef in the closing minutes of a close game. I was amazed that Portland managed to choke so hard without him in the game this year. Show's he truly is the best sixth man in the league though, even when he's on the bench it's like he's out on the floor. HOW IN THE WORLD COULD YOU HAVE LIKED HIM??????

Stop being so mean. De mortuis nihil nisi bene, my friend... and this applies to Schrempf in terms of being an NBA player now...since he is gone...let me quote some of the stuff from his nba.com player file.

The myth: Schrempf chokes in the playoffs

His career numbers in the playoffs are actually better than his regular season stats, so don't talk about choking in the playoffs. Let me quote some stuff from nba.com to prove that he was a crunchtime player who did not disappear in the playoffs

1996-97: "In 12 playoff starts, Schrempf ranked third on the team in scoring at 16.9 ppg and rebounding at 5.8 rpg and second in assists at 3.4 apg. He also was third on the club in three-pointers made with 16, in just 29 attempts, for a .552 percentage that ranked fourth among all playoff participants" - no playoff choking there!

1994-95: "Schrempf had another disappointing postseason, however. Although he averaged 18.8 points and canned 10 of 18 shots from three-point territory, the Sonics lost in four games to the Los Angeles Lakers in the first round." Still does not sound like HE choked, making 10 of 18 from 3-point land and averaging 18.8!

1993-94: "However, the Sonics' world came crashing down in the playoffs, when the upstart Denver Nuggets shocked them in the first round. Schrempf led Seattle in the postseason with 18.6 points per game." Looks more like Payton and Kemp were the ones choking!

1991-92: "The Pacers advanced to the postseason for the third straight year and again met Boston in a first-round playoff series. The Celtics swept the series, despite prodigious contributions from Schrempf, who averaged 21.0 points and 13.0 rebounds in three games."

Another proof that he was a player who delivered under pressure is even the last, disappointing season, 1999-2000: "He had several late heroics, scoring 14 of his 17 points in the fourth quarter against Dallas on Jan. 10, netting 6 of his 10 points in the fourth quarter against Washington on Feb. 18 and sinking a pair of free throws with 0:00.7 on the clock to clinch an overtime victory at Sacramento on Feb. 20." Does that sound like a choker??

    Some career highlights:

    - "Detlef Schrempf is Germany's most successful NBA player and a unique talent. In a pro career that has spanned 15 seasons, the versatile 6-10 forward has won two NBA Sixth Man Awards, made three All-Star Game appearances, earned a spot on the All-NBA Third Team and helped the Seattle SuperSonics reach the NBA Finals in 1995-96."

    - "He played college ball at the University of Washington, where he finished among the school's all-time top 10 in eight categories."

    - "Versatility has always been Schrempf's strength. At 6-10, he has the size to work inside, but he is also an effective driver, adept passer and excellent long-range shooter. He has twice lost the three-point shooting title on the last day of the season" (in 1994-95 with a remarkable .514 percentage - that being a forward and 6'10!!).

    - He won the NBA Sixth Man Award in both 1991 and 1992 (after being runner-up in 1990).

    - "Prior to the 1993-94 campaign the Pacers traded Schrempf to the Seattle SuperSonics for Derrick McKey and Gerald Paddio" (talk about a dumbass move by the Pacers...with Mark Jackson, Reggie, Schrempf in his prime, the Davises and Smits in better shape they would have had a shot).

    - 1997-98, "Schrempf once again displayed his versatility by ranking among the NBA's top 40 in scoring (15.8 ppg, tied for 38th), rebounding (7.1 rpg, tied for 35th), assists (4.4 apg, tied for 22nd), field goal percentage (.487, 26th), three-point percentage (.415, tied for 13th) and free throw percentage (.844, 21st). He was the only player (in the league) to earn that distinction."

    - 1986-87: "During one start as a fill-in for Rolando Blackman at shooting guard, he posted the first triple-double of his career, with 15 points, 10 rebounds, and 10 assists against the Milwaukee Bucks on January 30. Schrempf was invited to compete in the Long Distance Shootout at the 1987 NBA All-Star Weekend in Seattle, and he placed second to Larry Bird."

That reminds me a bit of Nowitzki, who, also in his second season, was runner-up to Hornacek last year. I think that fortunately, Nowitzki is ready to carry the torch now. It would be so nice to have the favorite player on the favorite team one day...if he could play for the Rockets!!! I'm still dreaming of Francis, Anderson/Mobley, Nowitzki/Langhi, Taylor, Cato.... Everything you say could be true of a person who plays very well in the first three quarters. I think he would have been fine if he was only allowed to play during the first three quaters of games, however I've always found it to be pretty uncanny how when ever I've watched games with Detlef, in the fourth quarter he's almost always, without fail, been totally underwhelming. It always pissed me off how he was given so much respect so that when he'd start bungling in the fourth his coaches wouldn't have the nuts to take him out. Did anyone else see this??? Is this just me??? I know my friend Aaron and I both noticed it seperately and just happenned to speak of it one time while watching detlef suck. Is there anyone who's seen what I'm talking about??

Schrempf was a truly unique player. I have respect for his game, but hated when he would burn the Rockets. He probably was a certified Rocket killer - especially with the Sonics.

As unique as Detlef was, Nowitski is frighteningly similar. The Mavs have Laettner, Bradley, Trent & Barros as free agents next year. With this and the money they're gonna pay Finley, maybe they'll be a little short when it comes to Eisley, Buckner, and Dirk in 2002.

Farewell Detleff....it was enjoyable - except against the Rocks!

    fro, yeah, I saw it.

like i said, Det had the tools to be better than he was, but he never really took his game to the next level. He never became a true go-to guy in the clutch.

    He is the anti-Elie.
