Hey guys I have a cousin that has a possible job opportunity in Houston that pays a little bit less than an offer he has in Chicago but he isnt sure if his "take home" income would be more in houston because of the tax benefits in Texas.

Does anyone have any info/links to pages that they can give me to send to him?

I figured that there are some CPAs/Accountants here that have that sort of info handy.

If it helps as to what sort of job, my cousin would be in consulting so a lot of travel to various states across the country and some clients in canada but he would be based out of Houston

I have a buddy that moved from Chicago to Houston for a job. He stated that he did get more from his check due to less taxes and that the cost to live in the city was much less in Houston than in Chicago.

No clue, but Texas has no state income tax, Houston has a lower cost of living and the chicks are hotter...

Illinois's tax rate is 3%. He may be subject to a local rate in Chicago, and I don't know the COLA between the 2.

Edit: In general Chicago is very expensive. I have a client that moved up there from GA, and the COLA has made it very difficult on her.

Interesting - I work in consulting in Chicago as well (and travel from city to city for work quite often, AND was at a client in Canada for a very long time).

What company in Chicago is the offer for? (if you don't mind me asking)

No state income tax and significantly lower housing costs than Chicago.
