With the amount of fast food, bbq, dieting and exercise threads here, this can't come as a huge shock to anyone.

Why is Austin so lean in comparison, though? Serious question, I'm not familiar with the demograpchics.

No way. According to Jamie Oliver. Huntington, VA is the No. 1 fattest city.

I think the population cut-off for this list is higher than the 50K people Huntington has.

Somebody needs to go to Mississippi and start a "Life revolution".

I read somewhere that 44% of children in Mississippi are overweight, and it all correlates with poverty and lack of education.

Probably because Austin is a college town, along with the fact that there's alot of emphasis on eating healthy, exercising here it seems like. Ex- Whole foods, alot of organic wholesellers, tons of parks, tons of outdoor related activities.

    Culture, mainly.

Education + wealth = a bunch of reasons why people end up eating better and being more active = less fatties.

Culture: people are just more active, generally.

Location: ample outdoor activities (hiking, biking, jogging, swimming, canoeing - hell, just walking down the street -etc...) are easily accessible

Places in Texas don't have a ton of opportunities to just spend time outdoors like other places in the country. In San Antonio you practically can't ride your bike more than a couple of miles without needing to cross a major highway or intersection of some sort... I live inside the loop near Memorial and I see people out there every day but I definitely see the same ones and only a handful of new people each day and the same times.

    Would have never guessed it....

    Damn those gays!

What do you really expect from a state (Texas) that provides most of the best bbq and fine eats in the whole US?

I think it has less to do with our food available and more to do with our absolute lack of exercise. You can't walk anywhere in this city.

There are only a handful of places in Houston where being a pedestrian (or a biker) is even feasible, let alone safe. That's why I lived near Memorial Park too.

Probably true, but Austin was #5 leanest... is Austin more walkable than other cities in Texas or something? I only go to Austin to visit my grandparents who are outside of the city proper, so I don't know.

I take Allen Parkway home every day and there are quite a lot of people jogging/walking along all the time, even in the middle of the day.

Hey, at least Houston is 9th on the list, we barely made the top ten.

    Somewhat surprised at Austin, though.

well people typically have their schedules but memorial park is constantly full.

which makes me think, people have some odd schedules. I will see people running at midnight. I will see people running at 10...when i take lunch i will see people...if i get off early people are there at 3...wtf do these people do?

Did you forget El Paso (3) was in Texas? 5 out of 10.

Because it's hippie town, they're too busy hugging trees and crying themselves to sleep over polar bears, whales, and various other endangered species

    just kidding..

but no seriously, it's probably the excessive consumption of weed
