to the OP, have you done any research on anythingbutipod.com? it's how i decided to buy my cowon s9.

beautiful AMOLED screen for pics and video (contrary to online sources, it does supports h.264, if that means anything to you), hands down the best EQ ever put on a PMP, and fully customizable UIs. another big reason i decided to buy this was because i absolutely hate itunes and having to sync, and the s9 acts like any other USB drive.

downside is the biggest size is a 32gb, and it looks like you have quite the music collection.

If you just listening to music and doesn't care too much about video, go with the Sony S or E series. It's support a variety of formats. The only reason you would paid a little extra for the HD Zune is for it's nice UI and functionality, good size video and especially if you want wifi to surf the internet on the move. HD Zune should be prettty reliable because it's a flash base storage and not a hard drive and the software is pretty solid.

I use to have a 30gig iPod and it was more then enough for songs storage. With 16gb it still more then enough since this time you will have to be picky to what you want on it. Since my every day travel is only like a hour trip so usually most of the songs I have on it will probably never going to be play.

Love my ZUNE HD. Waiting for the Windows 7 Phones, then upgrading to one of those. :)

I loved the Ipod hardware like 5 yrs ago....never was a fan of itunes....freaking hate it.

Agreed. Forgot about the Cowon s9. It's superior sound and great battery life. But like the Zune HD it might be too big for a MP3 player to be dragging around. But the most disappointing thing about the Cowon s9 is no wifi.

You might be able to remove the DRM from the marketplace and convert it onto your ipod.

That's another reason not to upgrade to a Zune HD right now because you would rather get a Windows 7 Phone with a Zune UI functionality coming out at the end of this yr.

I still have my 15 gig that I bought 6 or 7 years ago. Still working just fine. You'll get failures like that with every other brand. I have my issues with Apple but ipod durability isnt one of them.

Actually a buddy of mine that I work out with has a cowon iaudio x5 (I think that is what he said it was) but in reading some reviews on the cowon, it seems like the reliability is a problem.

What about a refurbished Zune? Would that be a good buy or not?

I'm not trying to be funny. Some songs you download can trigger that message to pop up on your iPod.

Well, I can assure you that wasn't the reason - more or less that apple has a sucky product.

Rhino, if you have any particular details you can give me, shoot me an email though the board. Yes, I'm being vague.

I own a Cowon A2 and have for the last 5 years. It is seriously a great product, accomplishing things I wanted that the Ipod could not. Personally, I think it's one of the better alternatives to Apple.

Currently, the S9 looks like a great replacement for the Itouch/Iphone if that's what you are looking for. If I was in the market for a new one, I'd probably go with the Cowon Q5, although that's more of a PMP (portable media player).

Are you sure saving it is a lost cause already?

A lot of people seem to indicate that a combination of iTunes 8 with Vista is the culprit scenario.

    http://63.246.25.250/thread.jspa?messageID=9600989

and here's some that say they have solution that sometimes works.

    http://www.ezcomputerhelp.org/i-tur...computer-use-itunes-to-restore”-what-is-this/

I'm guessing you tried some of this, but thought maybe it would be helpful.

Here's a discussion on apple threads about various symptoms and potential solutions. http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=9193983&#9193983

just thought I'd try to help. Might be the logic board or the drive itself is gone, but maybe not. I wouldn't give up yet, if I were you.

I update iTunes every day, so your theory is incorrect.
