I just had a horrible thought. The Astros are hanging tough right now...2 games back. If they strike, wouldn't it be a wierd de ja vu if the Astros were 1/2 game out of first place? 1994: The strike hit...Astros 1/2 game back of Cincinnatti for the division lead. Wierd, huh?
Wasn't Bagwell putting up MVP type numbers that season too? What a waste! I have a feeling that if we get to the playoffs with our 1 and 2 of Wade and Roy with Dotel and Wags to close it out is second best behind Arizona's death...... _______________________________ milo
I think Andy Benes broke Bagwell's hand a few days before the strike in 94. If there had been no strike, Bagwell probably wouldn't have won the MVP and the Astros probably would've had trouble staying with Cincy. I think the real de ja vu is with Montreal in 94 and Minnesota now. That Montreal team was in first place just like the Twins are now but the Expos were blown up after the strike and Minnesota might be contracted. They picked bad years to peak.
Minnesota won't be contracted. Selig's recent rhetoric was merely a ploy to make sure that the new stadium there becomes a reality. It looks like they'll get it done. Great analogy though.
Minnesota is no closer to having a stadium deal today than they were before the contraction talks began. The legislature hurriedly came up with a very sketchy plan that all but eliminated Minneapolis as a potential site for a new ball park. They will try again next session. Also, there will be a new governor next session, so that may help things move along.
Ventura was on board for a stadium plan. The Minnesota legislature is continuing to work on it. The new park is likely going to be in St. Paul.
