Sounds like a great idea............if you like relying on an injured star who hasn't played basketball in over a year. Or if you like first round exits.

Standing pat when you have the ability to improve is bad.

    Nuff said.

Someone tie this dude down and make him drink the kool-aid! As long as we have Battier, our bball IQ is off the charts. We dont need to add anything extra for next year.

Best Center? Dwight Howard isn't on this team.

    You mean "Foul on You?"

Dwight Howard limited offensive capabilities are more easy to neutralize than Yao great offense. And Yao gets fronted.

Dwight Howard is the best center in the league, like it or not.

Yao is aging and hasn't played basketball in over year.

Howard has helped his team when it counts, taking them to the finals. He might not be as good offensively as Yao but the guy is always healthy and a center that can play a full season is better than one that can't.

Anyone that would take Yao over Howard right now is an idiot.

    Best defensive center? Yes.

    Best center? No.

    Evidence?

I'm actually amazed he managed to get 9 blocks in only 28 minutes.

The Rockets have been trying to rely on Yao for almost 10 years now... and time and time again it ends up hurting us because he goes down with an injury during a big time.

Now I love Yao. What he's done for this team is beyond words for me. The guy goes out there and busts his ass every game, and even when he's injured, he tries to play through it to help this team win... but the Rockets just can't continue relying on him for a full season anymore. He's just not capable of it.

I love Yao. He is in his prime and D. Howard is still struggling his game, he would need more experience to handle his offensive play, foul trouble and double-team, he has to learn more tricks before being called a dominating center. Yao is the best if he manages to back to prime.

I second this post, Rockets definitely need another scorer and backup center, to limit Yao's play and make him more effective.

If you really think we're fine now, I guess Rockets can fire Daryl Morey.

LOL I can't believe you actually posted DH's stats as an argument for Yao being better than him.

    Yao's stats: DNP

I'm sorry but if playoffs were an exam even if DH got a 68 that's still infinitely better than Yao's 0. Yao's star status ended when his foot broke, how hard is that to comprehend? Jeezus...

Kudos for your optimism CloneBattier :) . Sadly, this current lineup cannot win it all next season :( . Even if Yao is "the best center in the league", that which is open for debate, the great wall cannot bring us to the promise land. I know most of us have been repeating this but we really need a bruiser PF/C to help Yao or be in his place when he is resting. Is Bosh really the answer?

If youve ever watched any rockets games with yao in the lineup aganist the magic you would know yao makes dwight his btch.

Howard has ZERO offensive game its ugly to see, he dribbles and muscles his way in to his ugly ass hook shot. Most of the time its an offensive foul but whatever, then his free throws?? lmao

Yao's offensive game is way way ahead of dwight you probably get all excited cause of the dunks he has. Dwight isnt a bad player and i like him but dont compare his game to yao.

The factors that govern whether or not Yao can come through in crunch time are immeasurable at the moment - the surgery he underwent is supposed to be one that eliminates the possible continuation of the injuries that have plagued him (minus that toe problem he had several years back). Either the surgery was successful and he'll spend the first chunk of the year shaking off rust and getting into NBA shape again (which is why we should expect him to be good in the minutes he plays, rather than a superstar), or he can't ever regain his form and goes from international superstar to role player. His ability to come back strong is what should be in question, not whether or not he can carry a team if the surgery was successful.

And Yao has carried this team in crunch time (see: Portland series). After Tracy's injury last year, the goal of the Rockets went from 'win a 'ship' to 'get out of the first round.' The Yao / Artest / Brooks combo very well could've been snuffed out by the Lakers.

He did not compare their games. Actually, he is saying there is no comparison because one player is playing while the other one is on a wheelchair. I think he has a point. I will take the lesser (but comparable) player who can be relied on to play the whole season plus the playoff any day of the week and twice on Sunday. Before anyone calls me a hater, I am as big a Yao Ming's fan as anyone can get. But I can also see the reality.
