Anybody else into trance, house, drum n bass, jungle, techno, eurodance, etc? Right now I'm into Roger Sanchez, LS48, Lasgo, Carl Cox and always into classics from Underworld, Goldy, The Crystal Method, and Kraftwerk (I'm sure Manny is with me on that). What are you listening to?
Not really a big fan. The only "elecronic" group that I would call one of my favorite artists is the Chemical Brothers. I also like Basement Jaxx. Other than that, I think Daft Punk, Underworld, and Prodigy are okay, but I've never really been able to get into them.

Yeah... I listen to alot of Trance. Right now I'm listening "Plasma - Imagination" but I have a lot more, I have aroung 10 GB of Dance music. Most of the stuff I have though are Compliation Cds. Of the artists some of my favorites are Ian Van Dahl, Dj Encore feat Engelina, Lasgo, Blank & Jones, and Tiesto.
I picked up the Matrix soundtrack just a few weeks ago (yeah I'm slow) and it kicks major ass! Prodigy, Marilyn Manson, etc. I'm starting to like that kind of music, whatever its called. Anyone know of any other cds' similar to that one? Maybe the Fast and the Furious soundtrack?

Ok I don't know much about that stuff so... What is the difference between trance, house, ambient, jungle, drum & bass, "progressive" house, electronica, etc. Could you please define what some of these genres are because I keep on hearing different names and don't know much other than it's all pretty popular in Europe and has something to do with techno? Right? I have no idea...
I'll try to explain the different forms, but JFive or someone else could probably do a better job. Trance is a highly emotional genre of electronica that has very few changes except for the "climax" which usually consists of even faster beats. Examples of trance artists include Paul Oakenfold, Paul Van Dyk, BT, Sasha and Digiweed. House has lots of bass and more variety and samples than Trance. Other than that, I don't know what else to say about it. Early Fatboy Slim and Chemical Brothers are some house artists although both of them do more stuff now. Ambient is characterized by "quieter" music and sometimes doesn't even have beats to it. A great example of an ambient CD is "UFOrb" by The Orb. However, that doesn't mean that every ambient CD has to have no beats. I would say that ambient consists of weirder sounds and is not as frenetic as Trance, House, and the others. Ambient artists include Future Sound of London, The Orb, KLF (Chill Out is a great ambient CD), Global Communication, Biosphere, and Spacetime Continuum. Jungle, as I understand it, is really a specific form of Drum and Bass or D 'N B. The bass on these are even harder than House and the songs are usually characterized with no vocals at all. Artists include Roni Size, Adam F, Goldie, and Aphrodite (who might be one of the best Jungle guys) and Dieselboy. Do not have a clue on progressive house. Electronica is more of a general term, IMO, like rock music. You might be meaning plain old techno which is just electronic music with some splattering of vocals including artists like Orbital, Kraftwerk, Utah Saints, Leftfield, Prodigy, Underworld, and Moby (back in his early days). Also, don't forget IDM which is Intelligent Dance Music. This is the most complex and bizarre of all electronica. The beats are really harsh and some of these artists use really weird instruments. Artists there include Aphex Twin (the best), Autechre, Boards of Canada, and Squarepusher. My advice would be to buy CDs or sample off the Internet songs from each artist listed in these subcategories like Oakenfold, Chemical Brothers, Roni Size, The Orb, Orbital, and Aphex Twin. It could take some time, but if you really like it and get into it, you will see the differences in the different sub-genres of electronica music. I can't really describe it other than to say listen to it enough times and then you will understand.
Eh, I guess this song is pretty much "pop" with all the air play it has gotten, but has anyone heard a remix of Dirty Vegas's "Days Go By" that has no fast background music? It is just their singing to some guitar(I think). They were playing it on KRBE a few weeks ago. If so, anyone know where I could buy/download this?
The acoustic version of "Days go by" is on the Dirty Vegas album, it's an extra track at the end of it. If you search for Dirty Vegas it will probably come up as "Untitled Track" or "Track 12", or something like that.
I've got a couple Sasha & Digweed CD's that I play when I have guests over for a little drinking, I also listen to Digweed by himself, and Deep Dish. I actually saw Sasha "spinning" at Twilo in NYC when it was still open. They played at that place once a month I believe, until it got shut down for drugs.
Manny did a pretty good job, actually. I couldn't have described trance any better... just listen to The Beat Friday/Saturday nights on 104 KRBE. A majority of the music mixed on that show is trance. Trance cuts can range from 6-15 minutes. They are long because today's progressive dance (all the music described with the exception of Euro-dance) is produced with the mixing DJ in mind. Trance is the most popular type of dance music in the United States. However, in Chicago House is dominant and in Miami bass is the fave. House is a little different than how Manny described it. House is a more redundant pulsating beat. This is very hard to describe because there over 10 different house sub-genres. Your typical house music is rare nowadays and includes artists like SP-1200, CZR, CJ Bolland, Rick Garcia, Fast Eddie, etc. After house you have Chicago House. Chicago House is very much like your typical house except it is more aggressive and samples are usually used throughout the track from beginning to end. House tracks usually run about 7:00 minutes. Fatboy Slim and Chemical Brothers are usually classified as Electronic (Prodigy, etc.) or Alternative. Ambient is just as Manny described it. A more relaxing type of music, electronic yet subtle. I recomend checking out "O.B.E." by Rabbit In The Moon. The will run anywhere 5-8 minutes, usually. Jungle is in fact a sub-genre of Drum N Bass however due to it's enormous popularity, is often considered a genre all it's own. Drum N Bass isn't as agressive as Jungle and Drum N Bass is more vocal where Jungle is more a sample based genre. Goldy is a great example of Drum N Bass and for great Drum N Bass mixes I recomend Dieselboy. Jungle cuts are usually 3-7minutes in length. Progressive House is blend between house and trance. Artists include Electric Skychurch, Jark Prongo, Rhythmkillaz, Chocolate Puma, etc. What makes this genre hard to describe is the fact that progressive house can be mellow or agressive and stil stay within the lines of ProgHouse. For example check out "Wack Ass MF" by Rhythmkillaz and then check out "I Wanna Be U" by Chocolate Puma. A little confusing, I know. Your typical ProgHouse track is around 8-18 minutes long. Electronica is not rock music. Electronica is indeed a broad genre (which in all actuality includes dance itself) but is more focused on acts like Prodigy, Aphex Twin, Underworld, etc. Electronic music varies from 2-10 minutes in length. Its interesting that Manny brought up IDM. Not many people are aware of that type of music. Too make it easy for most to understand, it's a new term for acid. However I can tell the difference between true acid and IDM. But I'll save everyone the confusion and leave that alone. lol. A nice IDM cut can be as long as 20 minutes! Eurodance (or Europop or Eurotrash as it's called by underground enthusiasts) is pretty much your typical stuff like Dirty Vegas, Eiffel 65, Kylie Minogue, Le Click, DJ Encore, etc. Usually about 2-6 minutes. Freestyle is the old name of what is now called breakbeat. The first freestyle song was Afrikaa Bambataa & The Soulsonic Force's "Planet Rock" in 1982. Throught the late 80s and early 90s freestyle became a more vocal and melodic genre with music from Stevie B., Collage, Johnny O, Lil' Suzy, etc. With the 90s, freestyle became more electronic and eventually branched into Breakbeat, a non-vocal sample based type of music. Listen to "Escape (Freestyle Mix)" by KayCee or "Beachball (DJ Icey Mix)" by Nalin & Kane. Most people just call all dance 'techno' when that couldn't be any more incorrect. Techno is a very fast genre. Usually the artist make one song, never an album. Ocasionally an artist will do the rare thing and release an EP. Frankie Bones is pretty much the only techno icon. Detroit Techno is no different than techno itself. Newer techno cuts are usually about 5 minutes in length. Needless to say, if you want to download some dance be prepares for big files!
JFive, That was an awesome summary of the different types (there were some that I didn't even know existed...lol). I just wanted to clarify what I meant by electronica being like rock music. I meant that I thought that electronica was the "general" term for that genre and that house, trance, d 'n b, jungle, IDM, techno, etc. were the sub-categories just like with rock music, you have sub-categories like punk, heavy metal, alternative, hard, grunge, etc.
Thanks Manny. Yeah I acutally understood what you meant... that electronic is the label put on all dance music. Sorry if it looked like I thought you meant it was rock.
He is Drum n bass, or he was when I bought his CD, Logical Progression, Level 1 by LTJ Bukem presents. He may be jungle now, but JFive would know for sure.
Wow, somebody talking about my favorite kind of music! Actually, I have never really been as into trance or ambient, though I know both genres are extremely popular. Sasha & Digweed, Oakenfold, etc. are definitely fine artists with a great sense of putting a mix together, but they've never excited me as much as they do lots of people. OTOH, I am an absolute w**** for house music. Can't get enough of it. People think it's strange that I sit around listening to what they consider redundant, thumping club music just in ordinary, everyday settings ... but it really helps me get the day going on a good energetic vibe. Let's see, what have I been listening to lately. I recently got Mark Farina's San Francisco Sessions. I still have old Armand van Helden (Greatest Hits, Live from Yo' Mutha's House) in heavy rotation. Innovative stuff like Basement Jaxx is good too ("Remedy" was better than "Rooty" IMHO). But mostly I tend to buy lots of compilations ... love the Ibiza sessions from Pacha (but beware the "Cds from Ibiza" phenomenon ... there's a lot of crap put out with that label) and other melodic, Latin-influenced stuff as well. The problem is that it's sometimes difficult to recognize lots of the songs on a compilation, so it's a bit of a gamble. If anyone is interested, Dancerecords.com is an excellent site that gives links to all the new stuff in the genres that DJ JFive and Manny have mentioned. House music all night long!
