The four-door, five-passenger Nissan Leaf was open for reservation by Tuesday afternoon, and the world went crazy for this all-electric hatchback which will go on sale in December for $25,280, following the $7,500 federal tax break for environmentally friendly cars. You might just be a tad bit more luckier if you happen to be living in the state of California – the state offers an additional $5,000 rebate through the state Air Resources Board.

The Leaf will initially be available only in a handful of states to start with – California, Seattle, Oregon, Phoenix and east-central Tennessee (where Nissan is HQ’d) – however, Nissan plans to give it a wider release by the end of 2011.

The Nissan leaf will be available in two versions – the standard ST model and the premium SL model. The SL model will cost you an additional $940, and will include a rearview backup camera and a solar-panel spoiler to charge the batteries for accessories. Powered by a 24-kilowatt-hour, lithium-ion battery pack, the Nissan Leaf can travel up to hundred miles per charge, while attaining a top speeds of 90 miles per hour.

so what happen when you are driving and approaching 100 mile on your drive?

No, it's originally set to be @ 32k, and there is a Federal tax break of $7500, which means they have been marketing it as $25,000.

As for fueling it up, initially the only place to fuel it up will be at home, in your special 'charging station' that you will have to have installed in your home. It requires a similar dedicated power supply like what you have for your dryer, and then some kind of base-station thing.

Once you give them your $99 deposit to get on the waiting list, they will eventually send someone out to evaluate your home to make sure you have the ability to have the charge station installed (at your own expense by the way), so I assume apartment-dwellers are SOL right now.

Anyway, 100-mile range would not be so bad for an average commute daily in Houston. It does however take several hours to recharge, so it's basically 'come home, plug it in, and not go anywhere else that day' kind of thing.

Was seriously considering it, I have been on their list since the beginning, but 30 grand is a lot to invest in an early-adoption novelty vehicle that only has a 100 mile range.

I think I will be more interested to see the Volt when it comes out.

And no it has nothing to do with being 'green'. I just like new technology. :p

That Volt that was initially supposed to hover around the $25K is now up to over 40 grand... Makes sense now since this little car is worth that much I would expect the volt to hit $45K....

I hear it is slightly better than the Ryan Leaf at picking up pass coverages and throwing down field.

The thing I like about the Volt is that once you go over 40 miles the engine kicks in.

Most of us drive less than that in a day so it would be very economical on 95% of our travel.

It doesn't fly, but at least we're progressing. The future is coming...

No it isn't. The future will never be here. We're always going to be stuck in the present.

I wonder how much power it takes to charge and how much that would cost given energy rates around Houston. Would it still be cheaper than gas? Probably, but I'd still be interested in seeing the difference.

Seems like they're going in the right direction. Although you saving on gas, you're going to end up paying a lot on electricity (charging at home everyday? Come on...) and maintenance (new cars/new technology = frequent trips to the dealership).

I'm definitely interested in getting one, just not now. Seems like a cool car to give to your kids.

Good luck to the pioneers who end up trying out this car.

It has a 24 kWh battery, which likely will never see more than a 50% discharge, so you are looking at roughly 12 kWh per charge, or less than two bucks depending on your local rates.

Also, in 5-7 years you will need a new battery pack, but the batteries will be much better by then.

I asked a similar question in the Volt thread. 2 posters then got into an argument about the cost. Unless you are getting it for environmental reasons you are better off with one of the new cheap tiny engine cars.

I wish they would make them look more appealing...

But it is about time. I would be intersted in purchasing one down the road.

I can remember when they first started selling Hybrids and I thought why make the cars so ugly. Decided then that I wanted the Civic Hybrid because it looked like the regular car. Love my Civic.
