He can block shots congrats to him. Good centers still tear him apart 1 on 1. 2 years in a row for a guy that has a lot of sexy stats.
when Hakeem was winning defensive awards, good centers would still have good games against him, and there were a lot more good centers then. you know why good centers would have good games, because they were good centers
The most exciting players usually win these type of awards so Dwight will most likely keep winning these for a while.
Hakeem was doing than simply blocking shots. Playing perimeter defense is a far more difficult task in todays game, I feel some other guard was more deserving.
Well done, though I agree with the above statement, it is easier to be a defender down low then on the perimeter.
what's gonna stop superman from winning 6 or 7 of these in his career? if he ups his block statistics, who's going to deny his status as the best Defensive Big of all time? I know Bill Russell has claim to this...but Howard's mobility and ability to run the floor and defend the pick and roll will make him maybe the best defensive big man in the last 40 years.
Shane Battier (Houston) - 1 2, total 5 "-" means he did not receive any 1st place vote. but it doesn't really matter. anyways. Gerald Wallace is my defensive player of the year.
What is the criteria for these awards, having the most blocks and rebounds, while being a big name star? Dwight Howard was going to win it, no question, but I still question rather is he really the best defender in the game (especially for big men)? Also, I doubt Wallace, Smith, or Smith get on 1st team All-Defense.
Winning the most defensive player of the year awards will not make him the best defensive big of all time. It will be a reflection of two facts: 1) big men can have a bigger impact on defense than perimeter players, 2) there are almost no other good defensive big men in today's league.
Anyone noticed David Lee has one 3rd place vote? Meanwhile, Chuck Hayes, Trevor Ariza and Kyle Lowry eached has the same number of votes as I did for DPOY. Not that they deserve the votes, but at least more so than David Lee. I guess Battier got some "reputation votes" since this wasn't one of his (or his team's) defensive years.
