Hey guys Im getting a new car for my birthday and ive been looking at used Range Rovers but my parents are kind of afraid to buy one because apparently they break down alot or something. Anyone have or have had a Range Rover in the past that can tell me about this? Thanks
No personal experience but they usually rank last in most dependibility reports. http://www.jdpower.com/autos/Land Rover/Range Rover Sport/2010/SUV/ratings
Used luxury cars are an even worse buy than new ones. Unless you're looking at a Caddy, they don't really depreciate that much compared to non-luxury cars. Reliability is a concern, and parts and labor are outrageously expensive. Your parents are buying you this car. It might be the last one they buy you. Get something new that will last a really long time. You don't need a range rover to get tail.
Look into a 4Runner. I've had a 2001 4Runner for about 5 years now and the car is just rock solid. Yeah, Toyota's caught flack for the Priuses but 4Runners are where it's at.
Don't buy one. Seriously. Yes, they are the coolest looking SUV's on the market (IMO), but they have major maintenance problems. EXPENSIVE maintenance problems. My mom has had one and my best friend has had two and all three Range Rovers broke down a lot and had major issues. Great looking car, great driving car but a total POS.
Have owned a couple. Beautiful cars but not worth it. Maintenance heavy. Gas hogs. Unreliable. The local dealers are assholes and you'll end up seeing Vic at The Rover Shoppe a few times a year. Highly recommend against it unless you have a large amount of disposable income to maintaining and running one. If your parents are buying it for you then I'm sure you don't have the means to take care of it on your own. I pity you poor folks if you do go ahead with it.
I used to be friends with a guy who sold them... they leak a lot of oil. If I had that kind of money to spend on that kind of rig, I'd get a refurbished Toyota FJ40. That is, if you're planning on using it off-pavement. If you're just planning on running it on pavement and trying to look cool, there are much better options than a Land Rover.
I'm going to go out on a limb here and think that the OP wants a Range Rover for status pimping and not for off road capabilities.
The styling of Range Rovers is hideous and if they said "KIA" on them, everyone would think the same.
My father owns a Range Rover and has had some problems with his hydraulic suspensions. Other than that its been a pretty smoove ride, and woman love it! (i drive it )
biggest pieces of crap on the market...they look great, but i've had friends that have had them and in their experience, nothing but trouble...hell, a girl I was seeing not too long ago had one and the air bag just started slowing deploying one day... very nice looking vehicle, very expensive, so the women love it because they think you can afford it and them at the same time...
My neighbor is a Landrover dealership mechanic and he doesn't even recommend it. He says it's good business for him. The body is strong but the engine and trans are pretty bad. Would not buy.
