The spurs were pretty good that year.

I think 05 was perfect. We had a 2-0 lead coming back home and we blew it. Tmac was in god mode, our bench was pretty decent + we had sura.

I agree, the 2005 were better, even the 09 rockets (even without Yao).
Maybe last year we could beat the Nuggets, to be in the Finals, to another rematch against Orlando, but without Yao, Howard, would beat the rockets in the finals.

Looking back on 2007, may indeed have to give Shane Battier credit for his intangibles. Because that roster was maximizing every bit it could muster out. It had no room for error.

Luther Head was the 4th leading scorer. Yao only played half the season as usual. Bonzi Wells was a dud. Little Vassili joined him in the doghouse for pouting. Good and bad, Chuck Hayes took over the starting role. Kirk Snyder didnt materialize. Of course Rafer Alston was that "3rd" scorer at .375 from the field.

Compare that to if Yao played this year, the 4th option is Luis Scola...or we can trade him for Luther Head.

Playing what-ifs, if that 2005 team had Juwan Howard in the playoffs, I'd for sure take my bets on that team over the 2007 team.

We couldn't win a game 7 in Houston.

That team deserved what it got.

Not a chance the Rockets could have won the championship that year. Van Gundy was coach, and the Rockets were going nowhere with him.

I remember that Jazz series. I went to the final game, and I was rooting for the Rockets to lose. I am a huge lifelong Rockets fan since the Don Chaney days, but I knew that for the greater future good, we had to lose that series so that Van Gundy could get the axe. If we had won we would have been cursed with a few more years of Van Gundy mediocrity.

This team is in alot better shape with Rick Adelman.

People flamed me at the time, but I am a true Rockets fan. Sometimes you have to take some pain in order to set yourselves up for future greatness. The Rockets are now a legitimate championship contender with a coach that actually knows how to coach.

    Amen brother,
I hate when people reminisce on these failures and drop a tmac-ish "What if"?

This wasn't like they lost game 7 of the NBA Finals,
this was the FREAKING FIRST ROUND.
Repeat this team lost in the FIRST ROUND IN HOUSTON.

    Yao sucked
    Tmac sucked
    JVG sucked

    they all sucked.

They don't deserve a "What if", they deserve a "What the f***"

The sad thing is the 2009 team when we opened it, was one of the best teams we've ever had on paper

    Brooks
    McGrady
    Ariza
    Scola
    Yao

    Lowry
    Landry
    Battier
    Hayes
    Anderson

depth at every position, I would have taken this team over any of our 2007 or 2005 teams any day of the week. The worst team we ever had going into the playoffs in recent memory was the 2008 playoff team which had a half hobbled T-mac and Rafer Alston as no 2

    hands down

people forget how great our chemistry was down the stretch even with the midseason trades for Jon Barry and David Wesley, the team started 15-15 before it turned 2005, we all wanted CD's head for trading Jim Jackson/Boki away for an aging Wesley, stole Mike James for flipping Reece Gaines/2nd round pick, and ended up 37-15 the rest of the season as Clutch said.

hate to say, the refs were freaking ridiculous for this series, but I'll stop the rant there about the refs

that team chemistry was just bonkers, we had the WBSS (White Boy Super Squad) with Sura/Barry/Padgett/Bowen, Mike James being that 6th man that Lowry is today with a jump shot, and Deke being Deke

do yourself a favor and look at the Youtube vids of that series, it was incredible....

n/m I'll do the work for you

Game 2 was so incredibly sick. I still remember being so full of optimism for our team at that moment, up 2-0, telling everyone it was our turn this year.

    Those refs. :(

the refs had nothing to do with getting blown out in game 7.

and if you go by the OP's logic that if the Rockets lose a playoff series, they might have won a championship, then

Hakeem Olajuwon's Rockets would have 12 more championships.

If Michael Spinks had lasted more than one round, he would have beaten Mike Tyson right?
