so when the blond kid reaches maturity is that when the candidate takes over? The whole idea of this kid bothers me.
I don't know if the kid was necessarily supposed to be older or not. We've seen him in two episodes and the same actor is credited for the role in both of them. The only thing that's really changed is his hair color. It was blond in the first episode but brown in last night's episode. That's probably significant.
Interesting. I had just assumed that the darker hair meant that he was a bit older. possibly blond vs. brunette . . . light vs. dark . . . yin vs. yang . . . jacob vs. smokey. too many things to track.
It could have been their intent to make him look older, I don't know. But a lot of people think that they used a different, older actor. Apparently that's not the case. I guess we'll see in future episodes if there is in fact some kind of aging that is supposed to be going on with him.
Also, keep in mind that the boy's last appearance was during a sunny day, whereas this one was in pitch dark. So the hair is naturally going to look a little lighter simply based on the sun.
Last night, Kid Jacob looked to me like he walked straight out of this <object width="640" height="385"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/_EXxMlIExpo&hl=en_US&fs=1&"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/_EXxMlIExpo&hl=en_US&fs=1&" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="640" height="385"></embed></object> screen shot of kid jacob Spoiler
Theres no earthly way of knowing Which direction we are going Theres no knowing where we're rowing Or which way the rivers flowing

Desmond is the constant in that he links both realities. He's the only one who has actually converged in both realities.
did all the alt world charachters memories come back when they touched a fellow islander? hugo kissing libby desmond shaking penny's hand (but he sat next to jack on the plane) charlie getting saved on the plane? (or did he bump into claire on the plane)? crap -nevermind- i think i just blew up my own thought process - this freaking show drives me nuts!
Smokey impersonated Isabella to trick Richard shortly after the Black Rock wreck, but it was really her at the end of the episode. One thing I didn't consider is that not everyone Hurley sees has to be a Whisper-maker. Some by touch, some by sight, some by a near death experience/bump on the noggin. It *appears* that those that die in the "real" timeline are more quickly/easily "awakened on the other. It also seems that it helps to have an awakened person wake someone else (Sawyer wasn't jolted by Miles or Kate, everyone bumped into each other on the 815 flight, etc).
It might be too soon to tell. Yeah, Charlie, Faraday, and Libby seemed to get these memories, but Charlotte and Locke didn't. There may be something there but there may not be as well.
I have come to the conclusion that: Hugo is Jacob Locke is FLocke Hugo is fortunate in both realities. Ending up rich and famous dispite himself Locke is a victim in both realities. He is kind of bitter and angry. So I think they were destined to be the parts they playing they seem like extremes. Like Jacob and the MiB Rocket River
Hugo was having bad luck before the island. Accidentally killing someone, going crazy, and the numbers curse constantly bringing bad luck to him post lottery. I can see your analogy working in that Hugo still remained positive about life and looked to repair his relationship with his dad while Locke couldnt get over his bad relationship and let it ruin everything good he had.
Hurley's dad only looked to repair their relationship after the lottery, and was denied at first. John was the one who tried repeatedly for his father's affection even after he had stolen his kidney.
