Sure. But the question wasn't directed to all-teams of all-time.

Can this team win the championship without an elite SG or F? If no, how do we get one?

Come now. Drexler was a elite SG. He wasn't Kobe or Jordan, but he was still named to one of the NBA's 50 greatest players in history and a 10 time All-star player.

An elite player is a guy that can carry his team on his back in the playoffs to win games. Billups carried the Pistons on his back in several playoff series including the NBA Finals against Kobe and the Lakers. Once Billups left, the Pistons completely fell apart in the last 2 seasons.

the reason why we can't is because yao has been injured this season completely so probably when he comes back he isn't going to be the yao we saw last year. right now we don't need and elite sg because we have kevin martin who is great and now that he is on a winning team he can climb to "elite" status. since yao isn't going to be playing big minutes and we don't have a great backup at center we will be vulnerable in the lo post. so if we get a great or maybe even allstar level pf who can rotate between c and pf so that scola can still get at least 20 - 25 mins a game we will be unbeatable with a steady rotation.

correction, the C/PF/SG and PG slots will be one-three levels below elite. If you think Yao is still an elite center considering his injury history and the fact that he just had surgery, then I don't know what to say you.

lol nah, yao isnt elite. elite would be his offensive skills + d12's rebounds/blocks. that's what shaq was, minus the jumper and add a way more dominant post up game

I'm with this. Players can elevate their status depending on certain performances too (and vice versa) ... especially in a playoff series.

Fair in this specific case, but not my point. I didn't say you didn't need any elite players. I said there's not a formula where you're sunk if you don't plug in an 'elite SG or F', as the thread title says.

Kevin is not elite. He is an average to an above-average scorer...and that is fine with me. He shoots and slashes and when it comes to the line, he shoots a high percentage. We need that type of player when it comes to the playoffs which will be very physical and every point is essential. We definitely can win a C even without an elite SG or F. We just need decent athletes who can step up their game when our main guys can't :)

he's an average scorer? are you an idiot? the league average is 10ppg. he has a career average of 17, he averaged 24/25 in respective seasons in addition to 20 this season. not to mention he's been above 20 for the past 4 consecutive. please don't post ignorant drivel.

Still not elite to me good sir. Kobe is elite. Jordan was elite going to legendary. I will concede that he is not just average. He is an above average scorer. Be that as it may, I just can't give away the label of "elite" just like that.

Clyde was part of the Rockets team that repeated. What about the 1994 team? They definitely had no superstar at SG.

problem is how do you Define "elite"?

if we define elite to be:

    1. Someone who can dominate the opposing man guarding him... I may be inclined to include Martin for his ability to get baskets and draw fouls.

    2. Someone who has mastered every part of the game... I would not include Martin here.

How many elite players are there in the league? do you take the top 10? 20? 30? all around best? or best at their position?

depending on how you define elite, the answer if we can win or not is different. If we define elite as #2 I think we can absolutely win without an elite player. If we define it as #1 I think we would have a much harder time winning.

Detroit didn't have any elite players. Nobody considered Billups elite until he won the title. Same can be said of Parker and Ginobilli on San Antonio. There are probably less than 10 elite players in the league, they are hard to come by.

Could it be even more obvious he just said that to get under your skin? He must be LHAO when he saw your reply. You are too easy to be manipulated.

    Elite SG, F = top 4 (5)

    1993-94 Houston Rockets
1994-95 Houston Rockets (Clyde was good, but he was not the Drexler of the 80s)
    1998-99 San Antonio Spurs
2002-03 San Antonio Spurs (Ginobili and Jackson were good, but they were not in the same league with Kobe, Allen, Pierce, T-Mac, Iverson, and Carter)
    2003-04 Detroit Pistons

Man.. When healthy K Martin is a bad a$$! Maybe not on defense but with team help we can make up for it..

If everybody is healthy and stays healthy next year. plus you add a decent draft pick and a year of experience to our own young players (C Bud, J Taylor and J Hill).. We are going to look good...

    Cant wait..

Elite to me is top 5 in your position. Top 3 are perennial All-Star, Hall of Famers, top 5 is elite.

Top 10 is players that can move up and down - could be a Top 3 player has declined and moved down. Or a young emerging player with a chance to move up.

Thats why Yao is CURRENT NBA ELITE. He is elite in TODAY'S NBA as a legit top 3-5 center.
