I lost interest after episode 2. I'll probably end up watching it on dvd, but it isn't anywhere close to BOB
Did everyone lose interest already? My biggest problem with the show up to this point is that the production value didn't seem to be there. This mini series has the largest budget in history but the battles in the first few episodes were mediocre. There was lots of quick panning and cuts, yelling, shooting, all in the dark which made it hard to discern what was going on. But, episode 5 seems to be a turning point. The view from the LVTs coming off the boats was breathtaking. The landing on Peleliu was amazing. The action gave a sense of the chaos that went on but it was focused enough that it was easy to follow. I have renewed faith in the show. I recommend people give it another chance.
I like it a lot. It's enough for me to keep interested knowing this stuff really happened for the most part. Episode 3 was slow but it didnt start out slow like the first one. (Even though I still loved it) I would give it another chance too.
It's kept my watching but doesn't come anywhere near BOB... you really got into the characters in that one but still halfway through the pacific i'm forgetting who some of the mains are.
When keeping it real goes wrong. What I mean by that is that the series makes great effort to being very realistic and faithful to its source material while making it harder to follow. For example, most people probably had trouble understanding just what happened in Guadalcanal night battles, but from what I have read, it was just as chaotic in reality as well. Then we go to Melbourne, where these characters, who we don't really know, don't appear very sympathetic and basically just bang everything that moves. But I guess that how it was. After already getting somewhat tired and jaded about the whole thing, soldiers get sent to peacefful Melbourne, where they have lots of free time and lots of free newly available women at their disposal. Then back again to the chaotic battles who are very hard to follow. Some new faces are introduced as well, but I would bet that in the following parts some familiar faces we have now just started to really get to know get thrown to the meat grinder. The newest part started the story of Peleliu, which to my knowledge relativeto the size of the battle was one of the bloodiest battles of the WWII. So, not every character is likely to survive intact. From the movie-/seriesmaking standpoint, Band of Brothers source material had so much more going for it. But I'm still enjoying the Pacific as well. It should also get better with additional viewing, when you have a better idea what is really happening.
Episode tonight was very intense. I liked it a lot. My fav episode maybe. Got me back into it for sure.
Yeah, I loved Band of Bros and was SO pumped about this series, but I watched the first two ep's and the rest are sitting on my DVR and I'm having trouble getting motivated to watch them. The comments here and at my office certainly don't help things
yeah, I think Sledge's story will save this series and will be what people remember about The Pacific. Leckie is a dark and tortured man and Basilone has been "selling bonds and dicking blondes" I'm also glad to learn more about Peleliu. that beach landing and battle was intense... I didn't see BoB, so I don't have the pre-conceived expectations. The Pacific certainly hasn't disappointed, but I can still only name a few of the characters I know. The airstrip crossing in episode 6 was amazing. Sledge said it was one his most terrifying experiences through the war and I think they did a great job realizing it. I can't even begin to understand what that must have felt like. Kudos to those brave men.
Just watched Part 6 last night. WOW. That was just harrowing to watch those guys cross that airfield. The first 3 or 4 episodes didn't do much for me, but that last 2 have really nailed it and lived up to all the hype. We finally have some action that truly shows what those Marines had to go through. And more importantly, we finally have some good character development: Spoiler -The opening scene with Sid basically lying to Sledge's mother about how he's not worried about him...and his Dad knowingly looking at him and understanding that he was just saying that to make her feel better...and appreciating it. Powerful stuff. -Sledge and Snafu's budding friendship. Sledge starting to prove his father right about how going to war changes you forever. Sledge finally gaining Snafu's respect. Snafu, who has lost his innocence a long time ago, trying unsuccessfully to help Sledge maintain his. Again, powerful stuff. -Lekie taking that dead Marine's canteen....then thinking better of it out of respect for him. -Lekie feeling guilty about not making it back to "Runner" as he promised he would....and Runner understanding. Just a great episode all the way around. In a way, I think Sledge and Leckie are just as compelling characters (if not more) than any characters in the original BoB. THIS is what I've been waiting for watching The Pacific.
Damn, isn't anybody watching this? Another AMAZING episode last night. After a slow start, I'm really starting to get into this series now. So much so that I think, when it's all said and done, this might even be better than the original BoB. If you've been holding off because the first 3 episodes were boring, you're really missing out. The last 3 episodes have just been stunningly good. Some of my favorite moments from Part 7: Spoiler -Sledge killing that charging Japanese soldier. The guy's rifle jams, so he pulls out his sword and charges him. Just shows you the mentality of the enemy those Marines were fighting. No surrender indeed. -Sledge trying to rescue Hillbilly with the stretcher. All that work and Hillbilly just ends up getting shot anyway. Just another incident that takes Sledge further and further away from his innocence...just like his Father predicted. -Gunny losing it. That's the last guy I thought would ever lose it. -The irony of Haldane being covered with a blanket that his Dad probably helped make. Very sad. -When Sledge is about to cut that soldier's teeth out, Snafu of all people, tells him not to. He is clearly invested in Sledge staying true to himself and his morals, but tries to save face by saying it's because of germs. Pretty powerful stuff. -Sledge's cold stare at the officer telling him to keep moving at the lemonade stand. He is definitely born-again hard. Looks like Part 8 will be Iwo Jima. I'm really looking forward to seeing how they handle this iconic battle.
very well stated, ima. I knew the Peleliu story would capture some viewers over episodes 5-7. Mazzello is doing such a great job as Sledge, slowly losing that innocence as you describe. it was good to see Chuckler at the end. I'm still partial to Leckie's crew, but as I said, Sledge's story and the brotherhood in his company is what keeps me watching this series... Spoiler Don't Google John Basilone if you don't want to know what happens to him in the next coming episodes
I might have to give this another shot. Sounds like it's a case like Spartacus....starting out slow, boring....but picking up immensely. They are all sitting on my DVR....haven't been motivated enough to watch them.
Yeah, I'll have to do the same, but I'll wait until it comes out on DVD, it is more enjoyable when I can watch them one after another
Yeah very true nobody is mentioning this fantastic show and yes it is far superior than BOB.. The war scenes are more graphic and brutal for sure.. Did anyone catch a preview of episode 9?? Looks really intense....
