Nice recovery by Phil to make the birdie putt, which was actually longer. It's very easy (see Tiger about 30 seconds later) to miss the comebacker after you've already missed a short one - it puts you on tilt, so to speak. Enormous putt by Westwood for birdie on 13 - without that, tournament might have been over (even though Kim is two back, keep in mind he's played the par-5 15th and Phil hasn't.) Westwood is still in play...
By the way, that second shot from Phil still ended up meaning a lot, even though he missed the eagle. If he lays up, which almost every player would've done, he'd have needed a remarkable third shot to get within four feet (where he converted birdie from).
Tiger has that look on his face wondering which woman will be in his hotel room when he is finished golfing today.
Epic choke = Bogeying a hole on the back 9 when you're still in contention. One of the biggest chokes of Tiger's career, bar none.
Jean Van De Velde at the Open = Epic choke Mickelson at Us Open final hole = Epic choke etc. This = Not an epic choke
Got to admit this is the first time I have watched golf Thursday through Sunday. Nice job for Phil glad he won it and not Westwood. Kim was fun to watch as well.
If Tiger pulls out birdie instead of bogey and then birdies the next hole (which he did), then that would have put him only 2 back before Phil's miracle shot on the 15th. 2 back versus 4 back with 3 to play could have changed Phil's thinking. Edit: Phil's miracle was on 13 not 15. Regardless, after Tiger finished up 15, he could have been 2 down instead of 4 with 3 to play for him and 4 to play for Phil.
Happy to see Phil win. It's been a difficult 12 months for the Mickelson family, so it was nice to see him get the win.
The guy deserves all the praise he gets. While I would have loved to see Tiger in contention down to the last hole, Phil's life has been a lot more stressful than Tiger's has been these last several months. The scene at the end where he embraced his very sick wife? One of the best moments I've experienced watching a tournament. The contrast couldn't be any starker. Tiger seemed bitter and angry about his game after the loss, and very self-centered, when he should have been praising the play of those who bested him in this Masters and displaying a little class. He's surrounded, still, by the scandal involving his conduct and how he's treated his wife. Phil, obviously deeply moved, with his wife after the win? Wow. I've been a fan of Tiger's and still am, on the course, but he looked bad at the end of the Masters. As bad as I've ever seen him, and I'm not talking about his play.
